Description
Abstract
This paper analyzes, by means of comparison, the different ways two probably contemporary authors, Macrobius and Fulgentius, tackled Virgil’s Aeneid. It posits that both of them utilize Virgil as a point of departure from where they can elaborate their own ideals about wisdom –and hence, about virtue, moral values and the relationship a wise man should establish with his past. Both authors do this by means of different interpretations and by means of a certain exposition technique in their respective works. Starting from the same point, t hey arrive to practically irreconcilable visions.
