Abstract
Este Trabajo de Fin de Máster presenta una propuesta de traducción al español de la novela gráfica Il barone rampante, una adaptación realizada por la historietista italiana Sara Colaone a partir de la célebre obra homónima de Italo Calvino. Publicada por Mondadori en 2023, esta adaptación celebra el centenario del nacimiento del autor y constituye una reelaboración intersemiótica e intralingüística que traslada la narrativa original a un formato visual dirigido a un público infantil-juvenil. La investigación aborda el fenómeno de la adaptación y la retraducción de los clásicos literarios, así como las particularidades traductológicas de la novela gráfica y de la literatura infantil-juvenil (LIJ).
El marco teórico se centra en tres ejes: 1) la adaptación y retraducción de obras clásicas, 2) la caracterización de la novela gráfica y su traducción, y 3) la caracterización de la LIJ y su traducción. Estos pilares fundamentan el análisis del texto de partida y justifican las estrategias de traducción aplicadas en el TLM.
El estudio analiza detalladamente la obra adaptada, considerando tanto aspectos narrativos como gráficos: desde la fidelidad textual y el ritmo narrativo hasta el simbolismo visual, el uso del color y la disposición de las viñetas. La traducción se enfrenta a retos específicos como la representación de la oralidad fingida, la traducción de onomatopeyas, rimas, juegos de palabras, referentes culturales y la estrecha relación entre texto e imagen. Asimismo, se presta especial atención al formato restringido de los bocadillos y al papel mediador del traductor en este tipo de texto subordinado.
La propuesta de traducción se apoya en las técnicas de traducción definidas por Molina y Hurtado Albir (2002). La traducción, por tanto, busca un equilibrio entre fidelidad textual, adecuación cultural y coherencia visual.
En conclusión, este TFM pone de manifiesto la complejidad traductológica de las novelas gráficas adaptadas de clásicos literarios y propone una metodología aplicable a encargos similares. La combinación de análisis teórico, reflexión crítica y práctica traductora ilustra la relevancia del traductor editorial en contextos de hibridación textual y visual.
This master’s thesis presents a Spanish translation proposal of Il barone rampante, a graphic novel adaptation by Italian cartoonist Sara Colaone, based on Italo Calvino’s well-known literary work. Published by Mondadori in 2023, this adaptation celebrates the centenary of Calvino’s birth and represents an intralinguistic and intersemiotic rewriting that transposes the original narrative into a visual format intended for a young readership. The study addresses the phenomenon of adaptation and retranslation of literary classics, along with the specific translation challenges posed by graphic novels and children’s and young adult literature (CYAL). The theoretical framework revolves around three key areas: 1) the adaptation and retranslation of classical works, 2) the characterisation of the graphic novel and its translation, and 3) the characterisation of the CYAL and its translation. These pillars underpin the source text analysis and justify the applied translation strategies in the final proposal. The adapted work is analysed in detail, examining both narrative and graphic aspects: from textual fidelity and narrative rhythm to visual symbolism, colour use and panel layout. The translation process addresses specific challenges such as the representation of colloquial speech and simulated orality, translation of onomatopoeias, rhymes and wordplay, cultural references, and the intricate relationship between text and image. Special attention is also given to the spatial constraints of speech bubbles and the translator’s mediating role in such constrained texts. The translation proposal is based on a functionalist approach and supported by the translation techniques proposed by Molina and Hurtado Albir (2002). The final version seeks a balance between textual fidelity, cultural adaptation and visual coherence. In conclusion, this thesis highlights the translational complexity of graphic texts adapted from literary classics and puts forward a methodology applicable to similar translation tasks. The combination of theoretical analysis, critical reflection and practical application illustrates the relevance of the editorial translator in hybrid visual-verbal texts.
