Abstract

Culture, as repression of basic instincts, encourages drugs development such as wine, as it gives people some freedom. This explains wine’s religious success as it puts the “cultural” (human) in contact with the “natural” (divine). And it also explains wine’s social success, as long as some rules that encourage comradeship and “presti - gious economy” are observed. Oil unction, the other big vegetal liquor, will also mo - ves into the same world. But both (oil and wine) will gradually get into the market’s circuits as they grow, without ever losing their pristine prestigious character. This fact can be well observed in Baetica, where Emperor’s economic policy transformation can be well followed through the observed changes in the archaeology of production and packaging centers
