Description
Abstract
This entry synthesizes key theoretical and empirical work on how and why writing in an additional language (L2) can represent a site for language learning in TESOL settings. It reviews what is known about the language learning potential that may result from the act of writing itself (in individual and collaborative conditions, and in paper-based and digital environments), as well as from the processing and use of the feedback provided on one’s own writing. These potential learning outcomes are discussed in terms of L2 writers’ engagement in language learning processes, and the expansion and consolidation of L2 knowledge. The implications that these findings may have for pedagogical decisionmaking are presented.
