Abstract
El objetivo principal de este trabajo es establecer una normativa, hasta ahora inexistente,
que asegure la máxima calidad en la prestación de cuidados al paciente que debe
someterse a cirugía.
Los cuerpos extraños olvidados en el paciente constituyen la raíz de gran número de
problemas deontológicos, legales y económicos. Para evitar estos problemas, cualquier
quirófano debería tener establecido un protocolo para realizar el recuento de todo el material
quirúrgico.
Cómo y cuándo realizar el recuento, quiénes deben llevarlo a cabo, el registro, la
actuación ante una incidencia, precauciones a tomar... son pautas importantes a seguir por
todo el personal que trabaja en un quirófano. Incluyendo la existencia de protocolos para la
manipulación de los distintos equipos auxiliares.
El seguimiento de estos protocolos asegura al paciente una adecuada protección, y al
personal que trabaja en quirófano, seguridad (control de infecciones, control de inventario,
minimización de lesiones...).
Este trabajo se ha llevado a cabo siguiendo la estructura de los manuales y
procedimientos que existen en nuestro hospital.
ABSTRACT The goal of this study is the establishment of a norm, nowadays inexistent, which assures the best quality of health care to patients undergoing surgery. Leaving sponges or medical instruments inside surgical patients can lead to serious deontological, legal and economical problems. In order to avoid this kind of problems it is highly recommended the creation of a protocol in each surgery unit. This protocol should determine aspects such as how and when to count the material used, who should be in charge of doing it, what to do if an incident occurs, how to prevent it, etc. All these are important guidelines to be followed by the staff working at the surgery unit. The compliance of these protocols ensures adequate patient and staff safety (prevention of infections, minimizing complications, etc.) This work has been elaborated in accordance with the structure of the guides and procedures used in our hospital.
