Description
Abstract
Abstract: Monasticism in Visigothic Hispania experienced a veritable boom during the last decades of the sixth century and especially throughout the seventh century. However, it is usually difficult to gain insight into the experience of the people who were at the forefront of this phenomenon due to the normative nature of most sources. The aim of this article is therefore to explore the causes and motivations that led monks, virgins and ascetics to leave their secular lives and embrace religious life. To do this, it is necessary to locate references to these people in textual sources and extract as much information as possible about these personal processes. The geographical mobility that normally accompanied the transition from the secular world to the monastic life will also be briefly analysed.
