Description
Abstract
The article examines how the critical reception of Tina Modotti has evolved from the time of her photographic production to the present, emphasizing that her work has been revalued thanks to feminist contributions and contemporary scholarship. Tejeda notes that Modotti has been subject to multiple interpretations, both for her aesthetic quality and for her political and social commitment, and that current readings incorporate new perspectives, such as the “affective turn,” which highlights how her images of women (Indigenous women, intellectuals, girls, and mothers) do more than document reality: they generate empathy and express complex emotional relationships with their subjects. The article also stresses the importance of approaches that reconstruct female genealogies and place Modotti within gender and feminist discourses, thereby expanding the scope of her critical reception beyond the history of photography toward broader cultural analyses of representation and subjectivity.
