Abstract
El artículo examina desde una perspectiva teórica e histórica la cultura de los cementerios
en Europa. En la primera parte analizamos el tránsito del cementerio intramuros al cementerio moderno
como una medida de higiene pero también de control biopolítico sobre el cuerpo humano por parte
del poder civil. En la segunda parte discutimos cómo estos cambios afectaron a la estructura y diseño
de los cementerios como paisaje cultural así como las pautas culturales ligadas a los enterramientos.
En la última parte se señala el papel del cementerio como patrimonio cultural.
The article examines the culture of cemeteries in Europe from a theoretical and historicalperspective. In the first part we analyze the transit of the cemetery within the city to the modern ceme-tery as a measure of hygiene but also of biopolitical control of the human body by the civil power. Inthe second part we discuss how these changes have been affecting the structure and design of cemete-ries as a cultural landscape as well as their impact on pattern of burials. The last chapter deals with theimportance of the cemetery as a cultural heritage.
