Description
Abstract
This article asks about the way in which José Ortega y Gasset, exiled from 1936 to 1946, lived, perceived and theorized his own exile; not only through his published work, but also through his personal correspondence and his unpublished work notes. After reviewing the main conditioning factors of this exile and its ethical signification, the paper proposes a reading of Ortega’s historical interpretation of the phenomenon of exile as it stands out of his works, before analyzing his definition of philosophical “ensimismamiento” as a metaphor for the condition of exile.
