Description
Abstract
The concept of phonetic law as a phenomenon of sound change without exception was enunciated by German philologists known as neogrammarians in the XIX century. Although over time the absence of exceptions to such processes was considered non-existent, first formulations of phonetic law were modeled on the physical laws. This paper reviews the concept of the phonetic law supported by the neogrammarians, and compares it with the characteristics of physical laws. Finally, the type of scientific explanation that such law can provide is characterized.
