The extracellular matrix (ECM) is a dynamic assemblage of interacting molecules that reorganise and regulate cell functions in response to endogenous and exogenous stimulii. Matrix components may affect cell behaviour directly or indirectly through growth factor sequestration and transmembrane signalling, by controlling the speed of various molecules through the ECM, and the access of growth factors, hormones and neurotransmitters to the cell surface.es
