Abstract
This article is an attempt to set some basic lines of the conceptof what Republic means to Antonio Machado, not only in his life but also in his political, philosophical and educational works, as well as showing his unbreakable loyalty to the democratic regime. In the first place, his republicanism is ingrained in his traditional liberal family background, which emphasizes his rejection of the monarchic model with great doses of anticlericalism. Secondly, the Republican concept takes the role of dialogue, which apart from its obvious Platonism, shows us the importance of the different forms of dialogue. That is to say, the Socratic-rational, the cordial-evangelical and the Quixotic forms as ideal for the citizens. Finally, this concept identifies itself with the existing models of the second (Republic) and what Machado calls «the Third Republic» as a means of compromise and belligerent pacifism during the civil war.
