Description
Abstract
Since the publication of Metamorphoses of Science Fiction in 1979, Darko Suvin's theses have been fundamental in academic studies on science fiction, creating a line of research followed today by researchers such as Fredric Jameson, Tom Moylan, Peter Fitting or Carl Freedman. Suvin's Marxist theory is based on a normative conception of thisliterary genre based on three structural elements: cognitive estrangement, novum and utopia. This article critically analyzes Suvin's theory of science fiction and its constituent elements, as well as its development in subsequent research. The article describes the social and university environment in which academic interest in science fiction arose. Next, it studies Suvin's conception of gender from Jean-Marie Schaeffer's theory of genres, and some close theoretical proposals (Marc Angenot and Samuel R. Delany). With this framework, the structural elements of Suvin's thesis are analyzed and the objections they have produced. The conclusions advance some proposals for a theoretical review of science fiction.
