Description
Abstract
Although Benjamin’s participation in the Youth Movement ended after his leader Gustav Wyneken pronounces himself in favour of the war, the work of elaborating that break-up and the criticism towards his own youth militancy and it’s assumptions. This paper analyzes one of this moments of self-criticism, a review of the german translation of Giacomo Leopardi’s Pensieri written in 1928. I’ll show that in this text Benjamin undertakes a late settling of scores with his youth engagement and particularly with the ambivalence towards the Idea of Youth and the kind of connection that the Youth Movement established between writing and political praxis.
