Abstract

This paper attempts to review the Environmental Education proposals in relation to professionals’ training in order to adapt them to the new perspectives on citizen formation in environmental issues, which are already a reality, as shown by the III International Conference of Environmental Education (AEEA, 2005). There has been a change from Environmental Education being only present in formal curriculum and in the hands of compulsory education teachers to becoming a determining aspect of the non-formal curriculum in the hands of a new group of professionals: environmental monitors, agents, mediators, etc. It is possible that Environmental Education has not been excluded from regulated education and its teaching staff yet, but it is progressively taking more importance. This situation has taken us to analyse: 1) the presence of Environmental Education in the educational frameworks since 1857 to our days; 2) how it has been presented in Social Science teachers’ training; and 3) the future perspectives in relation to the new challenges raised in the aforementioned conference.
