Abstract
In compliance with the Systematic plan for repopulating hydrographic basins to reduceflood damage, in September 1888 the Repopulation Commission of the Segura Basin wasestablished, formed by the forestry engineers José Musso Moreno (1840-1920), Ricardo Codorníu Stárico (1846-1923) and Juan Ángel de Madariaga Casado (1861-1923). They began in the Sierra de Espuña (Murcia), which they divided into three portions and severalperimeters, preparing a repopulation project for each one for official approval. The repopulationbegan under the direction of Musso and, since December 1895, under the direction ofCodorníu with the collaboration of Madariaga. They repopulated more than 3,256 hectares offorest in which they planted more than 4,300,000 trees. In June 1901 the Commission wasreplaced by the Hydrological-Forest Division of Segura and from 1903 the work was directed bythe engineer Ramón Melgares Góngora (1868-1943) until 1924, when the total repopulatedarea to 4,894 hectares. This work summarizes the development of repopulation, detailing in thebiography of each engineer their work in the hydrological-forest restoration of Sierra Espuña.
