Description
Abstract
The premiere of Misantropía y arrepentimiento, written by the german author August von Kotzebue (1800), is considered the most splendorous moment in the history of spanish’s Sentimental comedy. The play, translated by Dionisio Solís for the Coliseo de la Cruz, attracted both positive and negative reviews as its argument was considered subversive and scandalous. Starting from Eulalia’s character, the heroin accused of being unfaithful, we will analyze the literary formulation that female adultery receives, the links it has with the contemporary social and politic panorama, as well as the philosophical content noticeable in this artistic work.
