Description
Abstract
ABSTRACT: Tourism has achieved - and invol ved in its activit y – certain areas of South Chile. The growing interest of arriving visitors has been essential in relation to the main reasons which encourage them to move towards their destinations. Notwithstanding, such encounter – someti mes induced and sometimes forced - between visitors and local hosts, generates a conflict between the stereotypes stemming from their own i mageries and both benefi ts and disadvantages of touris m. The present study is exploratory and descriptive, with a qualitative research perspective complement ed with quantitative techniques. It examines the aforementioned phenomenon and comes to the conclusion that those encounters have to promoted through the establishment of intercultural relationships. Such rel ationships need to be encouraged by means of a tourism fostered by public policies oriented towards the creation of meeting places which can exalt the peculiar traits of local communities, together with their lifestyle and culture.
