Abstract
Cada año miles de jóvenes viajan durante varios meses alrededor del mundo practicando un tipo de turismo cultural no estructurado o semiestructurado denominado «turismo backpacker». Esta experiencia produce una subcultura juvenil distintiva con un carácter global. El artículo presenta los resultados de una investigación de naturaleza cualitativa realizada con mochileros en Chile durante el año 2011. El artículo muestra, por un lado, las similitudes entre el perfil y la subcultura de los mochileros en todo el mundo y los mochileros en Chile y, por otro lado, sugiere la presencia de una ideología particular entre los mochileros latinoamericanos.
ABSTRACT: Every year thousands of young people take trips lasting several months around the world while practising a non-structured or semi-structured kind of cultural tourism called ‘backpacker tourism’. This experience produces a distinctive youth subculture with a global character. The article presents the results of a qualitative research project on backpackers conducted in Chile during 2011. The article shows, on the one hand, the similarities between the backpacker profile and subculture worldwide and backpackers in Chile and, on the other hand, suggests the presence of a particular ideology among Latin American backpackers.
