Abstract
En la Encyclopédie de Denis Diderot
y Jean D’Alembert, John Toland es citado en dos
ocasiones, sin que se le dedique ninguna entrada
o se especifique quién era. En este artículo se
intentan exponer los motivos de esta exclusión,
ofreciendo para ello una breve exposición de los
principios básicos de su filosofía. Éstos, contras-
tados con los del movimiento ilustrado, ayudan a
entender por qué Toland no sólo no podía ser tra-
tado en este proyecto ilustrado, sino también por
qué tal omisión respondía a la manera en la que el
pensador irlandés había concebido la difusión de
su filosofía en sus últimos años de vida
In Denis Diderot’s and Jean D’Alembert’s Encyclopédie, John Toland is occasionally quoted twice, but no entry is dedicated to him, nor is specified anywhere who he was. In order to explain why Toland had no place in the Encyclopédie, in this study we will expose briefly the fundamentals of his philosophy. These will be later contrasted with the Enlightenment ideals, so we can understand not only why Toland could not be quoted in this enlightened project, but also how this omission was a result of Toland’s conception of the transmission his philosophy in his late years of life
