Description
Abstract
Abstract: The unicorn has been a fundamental polysemic zoomorphic sign from Antiquity to the present day, found in various and disparate places, giving each one a meaning framed in its particular socio-historical context. Throughout this article we are going to analyze 5 Italian Renaissance medals that are found within the collections of several of our national museums, in particular the Museo Arqueológico Nacional, Museo Nacional del Prado and the Museo Lázaro Galdiano. In this way, through an iconographic and semiotic study we will examine the meaning and image of this creature based on the identity and gender of its owners, since the message of this fantastic animal depends on whether the medals were made for women or men.
