Description
Abstract
popular.
The aim of this paper is to show some ideas about the potential contribution universities can make to processes that strengthen political consciousness and social agents’ leadership. ASTRA is a project of several grassroots groups in Gernika, meant to recover an old weapon factory and turn it into a social center; this project has been supported and facilitated by a team from the University of the Basque Country. Throughout this project we are learning about the importance of facilitating processes for constructing power from the initial stone. These processes strengthen the capacity of emancipatory projects and alternative political practices to challenge the political power of the lobbys of economic, political and technocratic elites. By attending suggestions derived from Popular Education and Participative Action Research, we are also learning about the importance of academic practices that don’t intend to lead the political process, the production of knowledge, or the definition of truth, but rather facilitate plural participation and help consolidate a point of departure for decision making in popular and collective proceedings.
