    Clinical skills learning of the first-year medical students atclinical skills laboratory using simulated patients

    Aims: To assess perceptions and performance of 1st MBBS students in clinical examination skillsafter early clinical exposure (ECE) through clinical skills lab (CSL) using simulated patients.Methods: The research involved 150 first-year MBBS students, 50 students attended in two groupswith 25 students each. A pre and post-test of awareness about ECE and CSL, a training sessionwith one set of students receiving traditional lecture-based “see one do one” teaching methods,and the other group receiving training in small group teaching with simulated patients in CSL.Performance was assessed using a validated checklist. Feedback was taken from all participants.Results: The ECE group performed better in clinical skills. 38 students performed well and 11performed excellently, compared to the traditional teaching group with only 11 performing good.ECE was perceived to be better by the majority of students (82.9%) than traditional teachingmethod. The majority of teachers (97.7%) agreed that early clinical exposure will help studentsprepare before encountering real patients and 90% of simulated patients agreed that students ofECE exposed group have examined better than the traditional teaching method (11%). The pre-and post-test scores showed an increase in awareness. Conclusion: Students in the first year ofmedical school perform better in examination skills if they have early clinical exposure and clinicalskills lab with simulated patients are the best resources for achieving the primary goal of skillacquisition

    Mood, burnout and dispositional optimism in kayak polo players during their competitive stage

    The main objective of performance sport is to obtain achievements at the highest level through the adequate development of the athlete. The scientific literature demonstrates the fundamental role played by the inclusion of certain psychological variables in the training plan. This study examined the psychological profile of kayak polo players through the variables of burnout, optimism and mood in the hours prior to the competition, relating these to each other and to some socio-demographic data. A sample of 86 canoeists, 60 men (69.8%) and 26 women (30.2%), with an age measurement of 24.4±9.1 years belonging to the 1st male and female kayak polo division completed the POMS-29, the LOT-R and the IBD-R. Athletes' levels of optimism were found to be significantly correlated with mood. Optimism also influenced emotional exhaustion. In addition, seniority and internationality were decisive factors in the level of optimism and mood achieved.

    Transformación de un modelo educativo a través de la formación y las comunidades docentes de aprendizaje

    En las últimas décadas han proliferado distintos enfoques sobre el estudio del desarrollo humano, la neurociencia y el aprendizaje, que parecen determinantes en la responsabilidad social que deben asumir los profesionales de la educación. Los objetivos de esta investigación son 1) Identificar el espectro de concepciones que tiene el profesorado sobre la práctica de la enseñanza universitaria y su incidencia en variables determinantes en la calidad docente y 2) Proponer un modelo de trabajo en comunidades docentes que facilite un acercamiento a los planteamientos prácticos que propone el Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior. Siguiendo una metodología cualitativa basada en encuestas y la técnica de Análisis Crítico del Discurso, se obtiene una información completa sobre la influencia de la motivación y las concepciones previas del profesorado en el proceso de enseñanza. Del análisis se deduce que existe una evidente discrepancia entre el planteamiento actual de los profesores sobre lo que es aprender y lo que se demanda desde la normativa europea. En base a la información recogida se plantea un modelo de formación y trabajo en comunidades docentes de aprendizaje, que pretende facilitar el aprendizaje situado, colaborativo y transferible que debe lograrse en los universitarios. En conclusión, podemos afirmar que participar en una comunidad docente de aprendizaje se reconoce como una práctica valiosa y necesaria para transformar las creencias y convicciones sobre el proceso de enseñanza en la universidad, que garantiza la reflexión sobre el aprendizaje, la formación, la responsabilidad y la toma de decisiones de los profesores en su contexto natural
