Universidad de Murcia, 2025) Santos-Moreno, Carmen María; Sin departamento asociadoThis article presents the results of a community-based intervention developed by AFA Aljarafe in six Active Participation Centers in the province of Seville, aimed at the prevention and early detection of mild cognitive impairment in older adults. The main objective was to identify early signs and promote cognitive stimulation through a community-based interdisciplinary model coordinated by social work. The specific objectives were: (1) to improve or maintain the cognitive capacity of participating older adults, and (2) to strengthen family and community support networks. The study design was longitudinal, with a mixed-methods approach (quantitative and qualitative). The sample consisted of 146 individuals over 60 years of age, of whom 124 completed the follow-up. The variables considered included age, sex, program adherence, evolution of cognitive function, referrals to the healthcare system, and participation in psychoeducational and cognitive stimulation sessions. Tools used included direct observation, semi-structured interviews, clinical records from assessments, and group sessions focused on cognitive stimulation and psychoeducation. A total of 54% of the participants showed signs, and 14.51% were referred to healthcare services. Moreover, 85% maintained or improved their cognitive capacity. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the model, the strategic role of social work in the community sphere, and the feasibility of using Active Participation Centers as settings for preventive interventions. The study suggests that this strategy is scalable, sustainable, and useful for the early management of dementia in community contexts.
