- PublicationOpen AccessA crisis of social democracy in Europe? An answer for the citizens' perspective.(Sage Journals, 2022-08-22) Palacios Brihuega, Irene; Ciencia Política, Antropología Social y Hacienda Pública; Facultades de la UMU::Facultad de DerechoThis article analyses the public support for the social model of democracy by focusing on the gap between what citizens expect democracy to deliver in the social realm and how they do evaluate its achievement in the practice. Using data from the European Social Survey Round 6 (2012), the results reveal that individuals with a lower socio-economic background, those positioned on the left and those who are more distrustful of political institutions tend to be more supportive of social democracy, while they evaluate its performance more negatively. The data also demonstrate that individuals’ social expectations and evaluations are moderated by their country’s institutional configuration of the welfare state, and more particularly, its degree of universalism. Overall, the results support the intuition that the alleged crisis of social democracy does not exist generally across Europe, but only in those countries where the welfare state has been unable to close the gap between expectations and evaluations.
- PublicationOpen AccessGénero y cuidados : respuestas sociales e institucionales al surgimiento de la sociedad de mercado en el contexto europeo(Murcia : Universidad de Murcia, 2014) Carbonell Esteller, Montserrat; Gálvez Muñoz, Lina; Rodriguez Modroño, PaulaThis article examines from a care approach the social and institutional responses to the development of the market economy in the European context. Studying this long period -which Polanyi called the double movement- is relevant because it constitutes the historical process by which the interests of the market, the logic of profits and its social and scientific naturalization come to dominate. Since then, the importance of care work in people’s life, the reproduction of the labour force, and the provision of welfare and social insurance have been ignored. Until very recently, historical analyses have focused on the emergence of the Welfare State, regardless of how the state’s answers interacted or modeled with other spheres of welfare provision, especially the family through women’s unpaid work. The article focuses on the European experience and the period analyzed comprehends the disintegration of communal and assistance care with the Old Regime Crisis, the development of charity and associations as solutions to the inhibition of the Liberal State in the 19th century -solutions that were limited and insufficient, leading to the state assumption of the care and assistance functions, embryo of the development of later Welfare States after World War II.
- PublicationOpen AccessSociosanitary legal and economic aspects in nursing homes for the elderly in Spain(MDPI, 2023-03-10) Vilaplana Prieto, Cristina; Gómez Martínez, Carmelo S.; Echevarría Pérez, Paloma; Legaz Pérez, Isabel; Ciencias SociosanitariasAim: The study aimed to identify and compare aspects of the different Spanish regulations on the minimum conditions that nursing homes must meet and to compare whether these requirements significantly affect the price of a nursing home place in each region. Methods: We analyzed and compared the 17 regional regulations that must be met by nursing homes in terms of equipment and social and healthcare staff and combined this information with regional information concerning the price and coverage of public and subsidized places in nursing homes. Results: The study revealed significant regional inequality in physical facilities and human resources. However, the number of regulatory measures referring to the mandatory availability of physical space or specific material resources was not positively correlated with an increase in the price of a place in a public or subsidized nursing home. Conclusions: No unified regulations throughout Spain regulate the aspects that residential centers must comply with. There is a need to move towards a person-centered approach, providing an environment as close to home as possible. The regulation of minimum standards to be met by all nursing homes at the national level should not significantly impact prices.
