A Prototype for the Voice Analysis Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease
(IOS Press, 2018-04-26) Martínez-Sánchez, Francisco; García Meilán, Juan José; Carro, Juan; Ivanova, Olga; Psicología Básica y Metodología
Background: Speech variations enable us to map the performance of cognitive processes of syntactic, semantic, phonological, and articulatory planning and execution. Speaking is one of the first functions to be affected by neurodegenerative complaints such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), which makes the speech a highly promising biomarker for detecting the illness before the first preclinical symptoms appear. Objective: This paper has sought to develop and validate a technological prototype that adopts an automated approach to speech analysis among older people. Methods: It uses a mathematical algorithm based on certain discriminatory variables to estimate the probability of developing AD. Results and Conclusion: This device may be used at a preclinical stage by non-expert health professionals to determine the likelihood of the onset of AD.

The undeniable relevance of space in Julio Cortázar’s Casa tomada stems, fundamentally, from its nature both physical and psychic. The house is, in fact, a correlative of the narrator’s psyche in so far as the invading noises embody his incestuous drive. This paper draws on the correspondence between the parts of the house and the parts of the psyche according to Freudian topographical systems and provides a new proposal not signaled by previous critics: the back section belongs to the superego, the front section to the ego and Irene’s room to the id. This interpretation explores four aspects disregarded by the existing bibliography: (1) the narrator’s defence mechanisms, (2) the origin of the invading noises, (3) the meaning of Irene’s night screams, and (4) the differences between the two characters in terms of narrative voice. A spatial analysis which takes all those elements into account could help to solve the story’s ambiguity.

Reading and lexical-semantic retrieval tasks outperforms single task speech analysis in the screening of Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer's Disease
(Nature Research, 2023-07-01) Martínez Nicolás, Israel; Martínez Sánchez, Francisco; Ivanova, Olga; García Meilán, Juan José; Psicología Básica y Metodología
Age‐related cognitive impairment have increased dramatically in recent years, which has risen the interes in developing screening tools for mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease. Speech analysis allows to exploit the behavioral consequences of cognitive deficits on the patient’s vocal performance so that it is possible to identify pathologies affecting speech production such as dementia. Previous studies have further shown that the speech task used determines how the speech parameters are altered. We aim to combine the impairments in several speech production tasks in order to improve the accuracy of screening through speech analysis. The sample consists of 72 participants divided into three equal groups of healthy older adults, people with mild cognitive impairment, or Alzheimer’s disease, matched by age and education. A complete neuropsychological assessment and two voice recordings were performed. The tasks required the participants to read a text, and complete a sentence with semantic information. A stepwise linear discriminant analysis was performed to select speech parameters with discriminative power. The discriminative functions obtained an accuracy of 83.3% in simultaneous classifications of several levels of cognitive impairment. It would therefore be a promising screening tool for dementia.

The construction of authorial voice in writing research articles: a corpus-based study from an APPRAISAL theory perspective.
    (2019-01-21) Zhang, W.; Cheung, Y.
This study explores voice from an APPRAISAL theory perspective. It aims to investigate how published research writers deploy ATTITUDE and GRADUATION resources to review existing literature in the field . T he study is based on a corpus of literature reviews (LRs) from 204 research articles (RAs) in computer networks and communications (CNC) and second language writing (SLW). Findings show that 1) writers demonstrate a strong preference to express their attitude through APPRECIATION rather than AFFECT and JUDG EMENT resources; 2) more FORCE than FOCUS resources are used to upgrade attitudinal meanings realized through ATTITUDE resources or to evoke APPRECIATION; and 3) one - way ANOVAs and post hoc tests have detected significant differences in the use of AFFECT a nd JUDGEMENT resources and in two sub - categories of FORCE and FOCUS resources. The study contribute s to new knowledge by relating ATTITUDE and GRADUATION resources to the construction of voice in the disciplines of CNC and SLW .
