- PublicationOpen AccessEl desarrollo de la competencia intercultural en los intercambios telecolaborativos(2014) Vinagre Laranjeira, MargaritaIn this study, we present the findings of a three-month online collaborative project between undergraduate students of English as a Foreign Language in a Spanish university and undergraduate students of Spanish as a Foreign Language in a British university. The students worked together in small groups in a wiki space, where they used the foreign language to interact with their partners in order to improve their intercultural competence through the discussion of cultural topics and active dialogue. Data was gathered from a variety of instruments that included the wiki pages developed by the students, their associated discussion pages, and the students' answers to two questionnaires (pre-project and post-project). The qualitative analysis shows evidences or traces of all the objectives suggested by Byram (2000) for the assessment of the intercultural experience. The participants' perceptions regarding the exchange suggest that, although they thought that the exchange had not contributed to change the opinions and ideas they already had about the foreign culture, it had helped them to improve their cultural knowledge and skills.
- PublicationOpen AccessIntegrating Intercultural Competence development into the curriculum through Telecollaboration. A task sequence proposal for Higher Education(Universidad de Murcia, Servicio de Publicaciones, 2018) Ferreira-Lopes, Luana; Bezanilla, María José; Elexpuru, IciarDespite its demonstrated potential to enhance students’ Intercultural Competence and other 21st century skills, telecollaboration still fails to be fully integrated into university courses. Literature shows that there is a need for developing sustainable instructional design models for this purpose. Hence, the main goal of this work is to propose a theory-informed task sequence to facilitate the integration of telecollaboration into university courses for the development of Intercultural Competence. Based on the typology of tasks from O’Dowd & Ware (2009) and enriched with contributions from other authors, the task sequence: (1) facilitates the development of Intercultural Competence according to EMIC model and adds a new block to its composition in order to approach the specificities of virtual teamwork, (2) contains detailed instructions for each task, (3) provides guidelines on implementation, on the selection of technology and on the integration of tasks to the syllabi and (4) offers an assessment plan, accompanied by a list of learning evidences that are expected to be manifested by students per task. This sequence can serve as a reference for further adaptations to diverse contexts. It is currently being piloted in two telecollaborative projects and the results are expected to contribute to future improvements
- PublicationOpen AccessIntegrating the global competence with telecollaboration in CLIL Teacher Training(Universidad de Murcia, Servicio de Publicaciones, 2022) García-Esteban, Soraya; Colpaert, JozefGlobal competence will define learning for decades to come as it encompasses basic life skills. However, there is a lack of data in current academic research on the assessment and integration of this competence in teacher training with current educational technology. Thus, this project had a dual purpose: On the one hand, it aimed to examine the global competence of different groups of student teachers through the development of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) following a content and language integrated learning (CLIL) approach. On the other, researchers aimed to determine optimal methods for the improvement and integration of this necessary competence in the curriculum. The project was developed with the collaboration of pre-service and in-service teachers enrolled in various master's programs at two European universities in Spain and Belgium. The research was carried out following a pre-test / post-test type design with various assessment instruments based on the OECD (2018) global competence framework. The quantitative analyses showed that, by integrating the SDGs when teaching contents, the participants improved in various domains of Global Competence (adaptability, openness to diversity, perspective taking), but also decreased in other areas (ability to interact in a multicultural world, respect for other cultures, ability to adopt another culture). The qualitative research showed that among the main educational technology examined, telecollaboration can optimise at least five dimensions of Global Competence. Despite the small size of the sample and the complexity of evaluating this competence, this study contributes to educational innovation by presenting didactic telecollaborative proposals and a theoretical framework for the integration and appraisal of Global Competence in (future) educators.
- PublicationOpen AccessThe affordances of telecollaboration to teach apologies.(Universidad de Murcia, Servicio de Publicaciones., 2024) Di Sarno-García, SofiaThis study presents the results of three telecollaboration projects carried out between Spanish-speaking students and their English-speaking counterparts. The aim is to explore the affordances of telecollaboration for the development of Spanish learners`use of apologies in English. To investigate its suitability, a control group and three experimental groups were set. Quantitative analysis of the responses to a pre- and post-test, as well as quantitative content analysis of the strategies used to apologise in role-playing tasks have been carried out. The results revealed that there is a tendency toward improvement in the three experimental groups, as opposed to the control group. In line with this, the control group used a smaller range of strategies to apologise. It is concluded that the first experimental group is the one that obtained better results than the rest.
