- PublicationRestricted2030 Agenda of sustainable transport: Can current progress lead towards carbon neutrality?(Elsevier, 2023-09) Khurshid, Adnan; Khan, Khalid; Cifuentes Faura, Javier; Ciencia Política, Antropología Social y Hacienda Pública; Facultad de Economía y EmpresaThe sustainable development goal of combating climate change highlights the importance of the transportation sector. This study analyzes the impact of eco-innovations in transportation along with traffic-TRF (road, rail, air), infrastructure development, green finances, trade globalization on demand, transport emissions, and greenhouse gas emissions from 1994 to 2020 in EU25 economies. Furthermore, the policy impact of innovation and taxes and renewables are estimated using their interactions. We employed second-generation approaches, PMG-ARDL, Panel Corrected Standard Errors (PCSE) and Granger causality. The results reveal that green transport neutralizes pollutant emissions, and traffic increases emissions by 17.5%, while green taxes limit them to 15.3% and 39.3% in the long and short run. Green taxes are a short-run tool; however, long-run sustainable targets depend on green transport, renewables, and R&D. European economies must revisit their transport and environmental policies, as current progress may not lead toward sustainable transportation.
- PublicationOpen AccessChallenges of technologizing teaching and learning at university(Universidad Católica de Valencia San Vicente Mártir, 2024-07-31) Monroy Hernández, Fuensanta; Métodos de Investigación y Diagnóstico en EducaciónThis narrative review addresses the challenge posed by the widespread extensive use of digital tools, i.e., technologization, in university education, highlighting three aspects. First, an overuse of digital tools by teachers is discussed, particularly slideware as the most frequently used technology. Concerns are raised as to how effective an extensive use of such a technology is in promoting learning. Additionally, the impact of electronic devices used by students, especially smartphones, is reviewed, and the decrease in comprehension and academic performance associated with reading digital texts and writing on digital media compared to printed format is highlighted. Finally, the impact of artificial intelligence (AI), specifically the ChatGPT language model, in education is discussed, addressing both its potential benefits and ethical and educational challenges. The integration and promotion of AI tools in education pose additional challenges, such as environmental impact, digital distractions, and educa-tional exclusion. A need for a balanced approach which follows the precautionary principle is emphasized, so educational institutions take preventive action to protect individuals and the environment, as well as to avoid potential harm when scientific evidence about an activ-ity or technology is uncertain or incomplete. The text underscores the importance of raising awareness about responsible use of technology in education and advocates for a critical and reflective approach in its application so Sustainable Development Goals may be achieved. -------------------
- PublicationOpen AccessSustainable Development and Social Inclusion: Efficiency Evidence From Spain and Policy Pathways for the SDGs(Wiley, 2026-04) Caravaca-Garratón, Manuel; Soto-Meca, Antonio; Solana Ibañéz, José; Métodos Cuantitativos para la Economía y la Empresa; Facultades de la UMU::Facultad de Economía y EmpresaThis study examines how hospitality efficiency, sustainability and social inclusion are associated with the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Spain's 17 autonomous communities (ACs) in 2023. Using non-parametric efficiency analysis with bootstrap correction, quantile regression models, and Random Forest methods, an efficiency frontier is constructed for the regional hotel sector and is then related to five sustainability indicators: energy efficiency renovations, ecological certification, quality certification, territorial competitiveness and inclusive employment. The results indicate that sustainability practices and social inclusion are positively associated with efficiency rather than hindering it. On average, each additional energy reform is associated with a 2.8-percentage-point increase in the efficiency score; each additional percentage point of vulnerable employment with a 3.5-point increase, and a one-point increase in territorial competitiveness with a 10.2-point increase. These findings provide empirical evidence, within the Spanish context, that investments in green transition and dignified employment tend to align with higher hotel productivity, particularly in tourism-dependent regions, while also supporting an operational policy agenda at administrative levels.
