- PublicationOpen AccessDelivery of health care by spanish dental hygienists in private and public dental services during the COVID-19 de-escalation phase (June 2020): a cross-sectional study(MDPI, 2021-08-05) Expósito Delgado, Antonio Javier; Ausina Márquez, Verónica; Mateos Moreno, María Victoria; Martínez-Sanz, Elena; Trulllols-Casas , María del Carmen; Llamas-Ortuño, María Eulalia; Blanco-González, José María; Almerich-Torres, Teresa; Bravo, Manuel; Martínez Beneyto, Yolanda; Dermatología, Estomatología, Radiología y Medicina FísicaBackground: The first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain posed a major challenge for Spanish dental professionals. The objective of this work is to describe the dental hygienists’ work status and employment patterns during the de-escalation phase in order to analyse the standards of knowledge, compliance with official recommendations, and dental activities both in the public health service and in the private sector. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire was answered by Spanish dental hygienists via WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram. The questionnaire was piloted before it was distributed and carried out during June 2020. Results: Here, 517 dental hygienists were surveyed, of which 86.2% followed the official recommendations to avoid contagion and 63.8% agreed with the gradual return to work by limiting the use of aerosols. Private dental hygienists identified more with returning to work without restrictions (14.5%) versus those working for the public service (1.2%) (p < 0.005). Conclusions: Dental hygienists’ return to work has involved different strategies, aimed at controlling infection and guaranteeing the safety of patients and the rest of the dental team. The availability of personal protective equipment, the adaptation of clinical infrastructure, and patient care management have differed between professionals working in the private and public sectors.

To evaluate the level of knowledge and risk perception regarding vector-borne diseases in the Spanish society and identify the risk factors associated with the level of understanding. Methodology. An online survey was conducted between January and May 2021, targeting Spanish adults. The survey consisted of 11 questions assessing knowledge and risk perception related to vector-borne diseases. Sociodemographic variables predicting the outcome variable (objective level of knowledge, determined by correctly naming two vector-borne diseases) were analyzed using multiple logistic regression. The outcome variable was then compared with the self-reported knowledge declared by the participants (kappa coefficient, k). Results. Out of the 1,646 respondents who completed the survey, 72.2% were female and 59.8% were >40 years old). Additionally, 87.3% showed a high risk perception and 61.7% understood what is a vector; however, only 36.3% had an objective level of knowledge (k= 0.353). The variables being >40 years (p <0.0001), having a monthly income >1,500 € (p <0.0001), and owning pets (p= 0.0423) were positively related with an objective level of knowledge on vector-borne diseases (adjusted effects). Conclusions. Both knowledge and perception of the risk on vector-borne diseases need to be strengthened in Spain, especially in regions where vector-borne diseases are endemic, emerging, or re-emerging. These preliminary results underscore the necessity of enhancing institutional efforts to build a robust knowledge base within the Spanish society, extending beyond scientific forums.
- PublicationOpen AccessPhysiotherapists' adherence to Clinical Practice Guidelines in fibromyalgia: a cross-sectional online survey(Springer, 2024-06-05) Gacto Sánchez, Mariano Luis; Baño Alcaraz, Aitor; Ferrández‑Gómez, José Édgar; Nouni García, Rauf; Gascón Jaén, Jaime; Lozano Quijada, Carlos; FisioterapiaTo evaluate the level of knowledge and adherence to Clinical Practice Guidelines on fibromyalgia of physiotherapists in Spain. A cross-sectional study using an ad-hoc online survey was implemented to assess aspects on the assessment, treatment, and decision of the length of the therapeutic approach on fibromyalgia. Based on the results, professionals were classified as adherent, partially adherent, or non-adherent. The level of agreement with several statements on the condition was also evaluated across the professionals surveyed to evaluate the potential consensus. A total of 240 physiotherapists met inclusion criteria, amongst which 68 (28.33%) were adherent. The academic level of studies (Chi-square = 48.601, p-value = 0.001) and having had previous training in fibromyalgia (Chi-square = 151.011, p-value = 0.001) displayed statistically significant differences across adherence-based groups. Consensus was reached for 15 out of 24 statements. Our findings highlight the presence of an acceptable level of knowledge and adherence to clinical practice guidelines in the field of fibromyalgia among physiotherapists in Spain.Practice implicationsOur results also reveal the existence of an evidence-to-practice gap in the field, with potential room for improvement: further efforts on promoting and reinforcing the importance of evidence-based therapies are needed, from university teaching plans to clinical updates for daily practice.
