Analysis of sports injuries during volleyball lessons in students of Physical Education and Sports Sciences
(Universidad de Murcia, Servicio de Publicaciones, 2023) Muhammad, Abdulla Ahmad; Korsheed, Ahmed Seerwan
This study aimed to analyse sports injuries during volleyball lessons in students of Physical Education and Sports Sciences. The research community consisted of 400 students of the third stage of the Faculties of Physical Education and Sports Sciences at the Universities of Kirkuk and Tikrit for the academic year 2022-2023. The research sample included 80 students who were randomly selected. The researchers used an ad-hoc questionnaire as a means to collect the information and data. The statistical analyses were carried out with the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), version 23. Considering the results of the study, the researchers concluded that the most common sports injuries during volleyball lessons in students of Physical Education and Sports Sciences are sprains and muscle contractions (muscle spasm). The injuries on the lower extremities (ankle, knee, thigh and leg) were the most frequent injuries compared to the injuries of the upper extremity (upper limbs, abdomen and shoulder).

Gamifying app-based low-intensity psychological interventions to prevent sports Injuries in young athletes: a review and some guidelines
(MDPI, 2021-12-09) Rubio, Víctor J.; Olmedilla Zafra, Aurelio; Personalidad, Evaluación y Tratamiento Psicológicos
Sports injuries have become a real health concern. Particularly noticeable is the increasing number of severe sports injuries among young people. Sports injury (SI) is a multifactorial event where many internal and external, proximal and remote factors play a role in a recursive way, including physical and psychological variables. Accordingly, many voices expressing the need of tackling that and several prevention programs have arisen. Nevertheless, different barriers and limitations prevent a wide extension of well-controlled programs, closely monitored by highly specialized professionals in ordinary sports grass-root organizations. These have helped flourishing different low intensity (LI)-interventions and e-Health apps focusing on both physical warmup, training and fitness, and mental skills aimed at reducing athlete’s vulnerability to SIs. This kind of intervention usually uses self-administered techniques and/or non-specialized staff that can effectively monitoring the program. In fact, LI-interventions have shown to be effective coping with different health and psychological issues. However, these interventions face an important challenge: the lack of engagement people usually show. The current paper proposes how gamification can contribute to the engagement to such interventions. Based on the mechanics–dynamics–aesthetics framework to analyze game design, the paper suggests a set of guidelines app- and web-LI interventions aimed at preventing SIs should include to foster motivation and reduce attrition.

It is not just stress: a Bayesian approach to the shape of the negative psychological features associated with sport injuries
(MDPI, 2022-01-26) Olmedilla Zafra, Aurelio; Martins, Bruno; Ponseti Verdaguer, F. Javier; Ruiz Barquín, Roberto; García Mas, Alejandro; Personalidad, Evaluación y Tratamiento Psicológicos
The main objective of this study is to extend the stress and injury model of Andersen and Williams to other “negative” psychological variables, such as anxiety and depression, encompassed in the conceptual model of Olmedilla and García‐Mas. The relationship is studied of this psychological macro‐variable with two other variables related to sports injuries: the search for social support and the search for connections between risk and the environment of athletes. A combination of classic methods and probabilistic approaches through Bayesian networks is used. The study samples comprised 455 traditional and indoor football players (323 male and 132 female) of an average age of 21.66 years (±4.46). An ad hoc questionnaire was used for the corresponding sociodemographic data and data relating to injuries. The variables measured were the emotional states of: stress, depression and anxiety, the attitude towards risk‐taking in different areas, and the evaluation of the perception of social support. The results indicate that the probabilistic analysis conducted gives a boost to the classic model focused on stress, as well as the conceptual planning derived from the Global Model of Sports Injuries (GMSI), supporting the possibility of extending the stress model to other variables, such as anxiety and depression (“negative” triad).

Mental health disorders are one of the most relevant problems in athletes and, as in the rest of the population, they seem to have increased since the COVID-19 pandemic. Sports injuries seem to be a relevant risk factor for mental health. The purpose of this review is to answer the relationship between sports injuries and mental health, not only because of mental disorders, but also as generators of mental health deficits. A systematic review of the scientific literature was carried out following the PRISMA guidelines, the PICO strategy and interobserver concordance for quality control of the registry. Six databases were consulted, PubMed, Scielo, WebScience, Teseo, Dialnet and Scopus, selecting 12 review articles and 13 empirical articles. The results indicate that there is a significant relationship between mental health and sports injuries, and that the symptomatology of mental health indicators in the athlete affects the injury or precedes it for a slower recovery. In conclusion, by checking the published scientific literature, we can find a possible significant relationship between mental health and sports injuries that will help us to establish the current body of knowledge on this issue. --------------------
