- PublicationOpen AccessEarly Modern Medicine in Manuscript and Print: A Triangulation Approach to Analysing Spelling Standardisation(Universidad de Murcia, Servicio de Publicaciones, 2020) Tyrkkö, JukkaThe standardisation process of English spelling largely came to its conclusion during the Early Modern period. While the progress of standardisation has been studied in both printed and manuscript texts, few studies have looked at these processes side by side, especially focusing on the same genre of writing and by using corpora that are sufficiently large for quantitative comparison. Using two Early Modern medical corpora, one based on manuscripts and the other on printed sources, this paper compares the trajectories of spelling standardisation in the two textual domains and shows that while spelling standardisation progressed in an almost linear fashion in printed texts, the manuscripts reveal a much more varied and shallow cline toward standardisation.
- PublicationOpen AccessEnseñanza de la ortografía, tratamiento didáctico y consideraciones de los docentes de Educación Primaria de la provincia de Almería(Asociación Española de Comprensión Lectora, 2015) Fernández-Rufete Navarro, AnaThrough collating of the views of primary school teachers who teach the area of Spanish language and literature, this research seeks to deal with the opinions of teachers andmethodological approaches used in the teaching of writing. In this descriptive investigation, the questionnaire is the instrument used to collect data from teachers. The sample is established by a total of 140 teachers from 25 schools. After collecting the data, these data were analyse to get a general view of the situation of the learning of the spelling from the point of view of primary school teachers who teach the area of Spanish language and literature in Almería and province. Forteaching, writing is basic necessity in all knowledges of primary and it is one of the quality indicators in our educational system as a basic element for the control of the written language. The teaching of spelling through activities involving written composition appears to be critical for teachers who claim agreed alternatives should be included in the planning in all knowledges of primary. In turn, there is the necessity of the schools are on the same page and agree lesson plans which are going to make consubstantial and hard-wearing changes on approaches and methods to be applied in the teaching of spelling and including all areas of knowledge
- PublicationOpen AccessThe effects of language typology on L2 lexical availability and spelling accuracy(2018-02-21) Martínez-Adrián, María; Gallardo-del-Puerto, FranciscoThis paper explores whether language typology plays any role in lexical availability and spelling accuracy in L2 English. Two groups of adult speakers were compared: a group of native speakers of a language typologically distant from English with a logographic writing system (Chinese; n=13) vs. a group of native speakers of a language typologically closer to English with an alphabetic system (Spanish; n=14). All participants performed a lexical availability task (Carcedo González, 1998a) which was later on analyzed in terms of the ‘total number of words’ and the ‘total number of words containing spelling mistakes’ per each of the 15 semantic categories included. Spanish speakers displayed larger available lexica and fewer spelling mistakes than Chinese speakers, an outcome which would confirm the positive influence of L1-L2 proximity on L2 lexical availability and the deleterious effect of having a non-alphabetic L1 writing system on L2 spelling accuracy.
