- PublicationOpen AccessLa cultura francesa en la novelística de Carmen de Burgos(2018-11-09) Pujante Segura, Carmen MaríaThis article examines the representation of French culture in the work of Carmen de Burgos. The analysis of her fi ctional work demonstrates that her Eu - ropean journey of 1905 to both France and Italy had transcendental in fl uence on the author’s life and work. The publication of the epistolary travel journal Por Europa (Im - presiones)/Throughout Europe (Impressions) is a de fi ning moment in her work, since it signals a shift from translations and essays (prior to 1905) to an increasing production of short fi ction, published in mass-produced weekly pamphlets, which had its boom in the early twentieth century. Many of her short stories had characters, environments and plots depicting French culture, customs, ideas, monuments and, above all, women.
- PublicationOpen AccessEstrategias discursivas en la narrativa breve de Carmen de Burgos(2018-11-14) Martínez Arnaldos, Manuelhe purpose of this article is to study some of the discursive strategies, enun - ciation and communication processes which, from a writing of journalistic af fi liation, allow the best interpretation of the socio-cultural and anthropological context in which Carmen de Burgos’s short stories are inserted. Special attention is paid to costumbrista texts, in which a descriptive function stands out, both in the rural environment (Rodalqui - lar cycle) and in the urban one. In the former, a series of popular expressions and recur - rent motifs are formed, which are transmitted as an echo from one story to another; whereas in the latter (in Madrid) the presentation of peculiar types, places of the city, and in regard to the social neglect and degradation of women. Other discourse registers are also analyzed, such as references to cosmopolitanism or to the intimate diary.
