Co-creation of economic value in peri-urban protected areas: Insights from nature conservation and nature-based recreation
    (Elsevier, 2025-06-07) Albaladejo-García, José A.; Martínez-Carrasco Pleite, Federico; Martínez-Paz, José M.; Economía Aplicada
The co-creation has proven to be an effective approach for enhancing the quality of decisions through a process of deliberation and collaborative management for protected areas. This approach has the potential to bridge the knowledge gap that often exists between the stakeholders, academic and administrative realms. This work proposes to use a co-creation process to determine the economic value of peri-urban protected areas, one of the most outstanding natural areas where the most drastic land-use changes tend to occur. The growing demand for conserving and visiting peri-urban natural protected areas is leading decision-makers to improve their knowledge of the socioeconomic values of these spaces. To this end, the Sierra Espu˜ na Regional Park (SE-Spain) is employed as a case study to enable the implementation of a three-step process, whereby the social demand for nature conservation and nature-based recreation, and the key challenges and potentials of this peri-urban protected area are identified. The methodology employed was based on a contingent valuation survey and the travel cost method, in addition to a focus group where a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis was conducted. The results demonstrated the usefulness of the co-creation process to improve the knowledge of: the social preference for nature conservation, with a total economic value of 11,301,112 € activities in nature, with a benefit of 4,921,840 € /year; the recreational /year; and the main challenges and potentials of peri-urban areas, highlighting the bureaucracy to carry out the actions and the demand for ecotourism-related services. It therefore justifies the suitability of applying this type of collaborative approach between the academic, stakeholders and decision-makers realms as a preliminary step towards the formulation of more sustainable management measures for the achievement of urban social well-being.

This article presents the ECOMERCA project, its objectives, methodology and expected results, as a possible methodological framework to improve the production and consumption of organic production. The project focuses on mapping organic agricultural practices in Andalusia in three representative sectors in the autonomous community (almond, plastic covered horticulural and olive groves), as well as identifying the main needs and challenges of organic producers in the production process, in the management of the farm and in the marketing of their products, following the AKIS approach (for its acronym: Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation Systems). On the other hand, ECOMERCA aims to deepen the knowledge of the market for organic products in Andalusia, studying its current situation and the potential for consumption and demand for organic foods and carrying out an analysis of the main forms of sale of organic products in Andalusia. In addition, the project proposes different outreach activities to the different actors of the innovative organic practices identified, both productive, market and consumption of organic foods, in order to generate innovation and increase profitability in the value chain and, at the same time, preserve the environment and satisfy social demand.

Crop diversification practices in Europe: an economic cross-case study comparison
(Springer, 2023-10-13) Zabala García, José Ángel; Martínez García, Victor; Martínez Paz, José Miguel; Lopez Becerra, Erasmo; Nasso, Marco; Díaz-Pereira, Elvira; Sánchez Navarro, Virginia; Álvaro Fuentes, Jorge; González Rosado, Manuel; Farina, Roberta; Di Bene, Claudia; Huerta, Esperanza; Jurrius, A.; Frey-Treseler, K.; Lóczy, D.; Fosci, L.; Blasi, Emanuele; Lehtonen, Heikki; Alcon, Francisco; Economía Aplicada
Crop diversification practices (CDPs) are alternative strategies aimed to achieve sustainable cropping systems and food production overcoming the agro-environmental impacts of conventional cropping systems such as monoculture. Thus, this paper aims to improve the knowledge of implementing CDPs in different European pedoclimatic regions by assessing the economic performance at the farm level. CDPs are compared with conventional cropping systems and clustered in terms of their gross margin (GM) results and variations. Farm-level assessment shows that CDPs provide positive economic results, representing an adaptive management strategy for ecological transition, without compromising economic sustainability. Particularly, the main findings show that (1) the impact of diversification depends more on crop type than on the selected CDPs, (2) most farms exhibited a low GM with low economic impact, and (3) there is a great likelihood that the CDPs facilitate the buildup of more resilient farming systems.
