    On the long-run association between personality traits and road crashes: findings from the British cohort study

    Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for those aged 15–29 years and the ninth cause of death worldwide. Personality traits play an important role in explaining traffic crashes. We use data from the British Cohort Study 1970 to analyse the effect of the respondent's personality traits at age 10 on the probability of having had at least one injurious traffic crash at age 30. Our results support the hypothesis on the long-run associations between personality traits in childhood and injurious road crashes in adulthood, but only for men. Specifically, a one standard deviation increase in the level of conscientiousness at age 10 would lower men's likelihood of having at least one injurious traffic crash by approximately 3 percentage points. The association found in this paper may suggest that improving personality traits through educational programs could lower traffic crashes and risky driving behaviours.

    El papel mediador del uso de la emoción en la asociación entre rasgos de personalidad y adicción al trabajo

    Este estudio examinó el papel mediador del componente de uso de la emoción (UoE), de la Escala de inteligencia emocional, en la rela-ción entre extraversión (EX) y conciencia dentro de los Cinco Grandes fac-tores de personalidad, y las dimensiones de trabajar en exceso (WE) y tra-bajar compulsivamente de la Escala holandesa de adicción al trabajo. Junto con este objetivo, se recopilaron datos del personal sanitario, en su mayoría enfermeras, que trabajaba en hospitales privados que prestan servicios en Estambul. Los hallazgos indicaron que WE tuvo un efecto directo no signi-ficativo sobre EX (β = −0.358; p > .05), mientras que el efecto indirecto de WE sobre EX a través de UoE fue significativo (β = 0.147; p < .05). Este estudio revela que UoE actúa como un mediador completo en el efecto de WE sobre EX

    The dimensionality of emotional intelligence : Evidence for a four-factor model for post-Soviet and Central Asian adolescents

    Introduction:The study of emotional intelligence (EI) has garnered significant attention due to its relevance to diverse age-and population-groups, and persons of various social and academic backgrounds. The capacity for an individual to effectively understand and manage one’s own emotions and understand and manage the emotions of others has been identified as important life skill and antecedent to personal, social, and professional success. While the dimensionality of EI has been explored extensively in Western contexts, there is a relative dearth of research in post-Soviet and Central Asian contexts. Methodology:Building upon the EI instrumentation developed in Russia by Lyusin and a large sample of adolescents (N= 658) from 12 schools, we find very little differences in average levels of EI in the schools sampled. Thereafter, using first-order confirmatory factor analysis, this study finds evidence for a Four-Factor Model of EI inclusive of Understanding and Managing One’s Own Emotions, and Understanding and Managing Others’ Emotions. Results:The model exhibits adequate model fit, discriminant validity, interfactor correlations similar to those in other studies, and is strongly invariant for gender (though partially invariant for language). We also find evidence for female adolescents exhibiting slightly higher levels of Understanding Other’s Emotions, and lower levels of Managing Own Emotions. Conclusions:The four-factor model may be a useful tool for gauging the EI of adolescents, though further research as to its utility in other post-Soviet, Central Asian, and other contexts is required.

    Turismo Slow: Motivaciones turísticas en función de rasgos de personalidad y variables sociodemográficas

    El objetivo de este estudio es analizar las motivaciones turísticas y la elección de turismo slow en función de los rasgos de personalidad, la edad, el género, el nivel de ingresos y los efectos de la pandemia. Han participado 192 personas con experiencias turísticas previas, con edades entre los 23 y los 65 años (X = 44,49; DT = 13,24). Se han encontrado diferencias en las motivaciones para viajar, de modo que a menor edad y nivel de ingresos predomina la motivación hedonista. Se confirma la relación entre la Extraversión con la motivación social y la Apertura con las motivaciones monumentales.
