    Detection of factors influencing circadian rhythms on Intensive Care inpatients and hospitalization: protocol for an observational study

    Aims Identify the prevalence of circadian health disorders in ICU and hospitalized patients. Stablish the relationship of the circadian system with light, temperature, noise and nursing activities. Background Commonly, self-assessment through subjective questionnaires is used for research about sleep quality. However, more reliable and valid measures should be applied objectively to find out the real prevalence of the problem. There is a negative relationship between circadian rhythms and hospitalization. In this study, we will analyse sleep patterns and hospital environments to implement measures to improve the quality of care related to sleep. Design Descriptive observational study. It is estimated that 975 patients from 13 hospitals need to be recruited from ICU and hospitalization units. The sample should meet the following criteria: Patients over 18 admitted to ICU and medical units, length of stay between 96–148 hr, with no visual, hearing or moderate-severe cognitive impairment. Variables: Sleep variables are collected with an electronic device (named Kronowise® and Kronobed®), circadian and infrared light exposure, environmental noise, temperature, unit structural characteristics, nursing care (from 0 to 6 a.m.) and, characteristics of hospitalization period. The study, registered on Clinical Trials, initiated in December 2019 and it will continue up to December 2022. Discussion Using objective and subjective measures of sleep and circadian rhythms, this study will shed light on the factors that negatively affect the hospitalized patients’ sleep quality and circadian health. The ultimate goal is to design hospital guidelines to minimize the adverse effects on the dependent variables studied. Arguably, these guidelines will contribute to reducing the risk of these alterations and it will also serve to improve the nursing activities. Conclusion We expect to obtain adequate results for the creation of a protocol to improve the circadian health, quality of care and health outcomes related to sleep in patients.

    Meaningful grunts and radical “Blehs”: polysemic identities through nonhuman noise in video games

    This article studies the radical identity-making potential of noise and nonhuman sound in video ames. To do so, this article focuses on the oral production of the rabbid protagonists—mischievous humanoid rabbits easily identifiable by their constant and cacophonic sound making—in the Mario þ Rabbids series. The rabbids’ constant shouts, grunts, and cries serve as great examples of the potential of nonhuman noise and sound to not only reproduce identities that escape from human-centric conceptions of being, but, more importantly, to invite players to see all identities—including their own—as polysemic and sometimes contradictory assemblages. This article converses with existing research on the ability of human voice and silence to manage identities in video games, with studies on nonhuman material excess in video games where players control nonhuman characters, and with work on how the way animal main characters sound in video games. This dialogue brings forth reflections on what being and becoming mean. The cacophonic nature of noise does not necessarily invoke the absence of all meaning, but an opportunity to embrace its many potential meanings and reflect on an equally polysemic world.

    ¿Quién puede hacer cosas con palabras? Injusticia discursiva e interseccionalidad

    This paper aims to examine the pro-cesses of silencing, analyzing the cases in which certain people, due to their membership in non-hegemonic social groups, are unable to deploy actions through language. First of all, it intro-duces the theory of speech acts, and the notions of “illocutionary silencing” and “discursive injus-tice”. In second place, this analysis is enriched with the contributions of postcolonial thought, to show how the performativity of speech acts is conditioned by the social structure in which the speaker is inserted, characterized by relations of inequality that enhance and systematize discur-sive injustice towards social groups marked by oppressions of gender, race, class and sexuality. Finally, it examines the notion of “noise”, pro-posed by Judith Butler.

    El ruido en el mar: ¿es necesario abordarlo desde el principio de precaución?

    El ruido en mares y océanos es uno de los más complejos contaminantes que existen y ello es una muestra de la necesidad, imperiosa, de que juristas se pongan a analizar tal compleja situación desde un planteamiento ecosistémico y a escala multinivel. Vemos como la contaminación acústica subacuática dispone de mecanismos e instrumentos jurídicos de control y regulación, sin embargo, parece que todavía los impactos que generan son de tal intensidad que existen ciertas lagunas, quedando mucho por descubrir. Desde este posicionamiento analizamos la necesidad de seguir bajo el prisma del principio de precaución o bien priorizar sobre otro de los principios funcionales del Derecho ambiental, la prevención.

    El sonido del aprendizaje : análisis acústico del IES Floridablanca.

    La contaminación acústica es un problema creciente en entornos urbanos y educativos que puede tener graves repercusiones en la salud y el bienestar de las personas. Este estudio se centra en analizar el nivel de contaminación acústica en el IES Floridablanca, para comprobar la calidad acústica del entorno en el que conviven a diario alumnos, profesores y demás trabajadores, utilizando mediciones del nivel de intensidad sonora en diferentes ubicaciones y horarios. Se postula que la ejecución de una campaña de concienciación entre el alumnado del IES Floridablanca resultará en una disminución significativa del ruido. El marco teórico aborda conceptos clave relacionados con el ruido, incluyendo su definición física, la influencia del entorno y los materiales en la acústica, así como los efectos negativos de la contaminación acústica en la salud y, en concreto, dentro del ámbito educativo. La experimentación consistió en mediciones iniciales del nivel de ruido en ubicaciones específicas del centro educativo y horarios determinados, seguidas de una campaña de concienciación del alumnado con actividades diseñadas para promover la reducción del ruido. Finalmente, se volvieron a tomar medidas para evaluar si la campaña tuvo un impacto significativo en los niveles de ruido. Los resultados de este estudio proporcionarán información importante sobre la efectividad de las intervenciones para abordar la contaminación acústica en entornos educativos.
