Oldham’s 2001 race riots: A critical discourse analysis of British and Spanish newspapers.
(AESLA. Asociación Española de Lingüística Aplicada / UPV. Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, 2005) Criado, Raquel; Filología Inglesa
In May 2001, the town of Oldham witnessed one of the worst Britain’s race riots in recent years. This paper presents a Critical Discourse Analysis of this episode of racial violence as it was reported by the following British and Spanish newspapers: The Sun, Daily Mail, The Independent, The Times, ABC, and El País. Special attention is paid in particular to the analysis of the characterization of the three main participants involved: Asians, whites and the police. For that purpose, a battery of lexico-grammatical categories was examined in each of these groups: naming, transitivity, passivization, nominalization, modality, logical connectors, and presuppositions. The material consisted of a convenience sample. Results indicate a generalized tendency of an argumentation directed at a negative portrayal of Asians in news reports, which contrasts with their representation in opinion articles. This unfavourable depiction is based on the consideration of all Asians as a rioter group. This phenomenon is seen as entailing a menace. On the contrary, regarding whites a clear differentiation is appreciated between a minority of neonazis troublemakers and the remaining decent white people. ----------------------------------------------------
