Impact of COVID-19 on athletes' mental health: A systematic review

Introduction:In recent years, nurses’ mental health has been increasingly at risk of deterioration due to heightened psycho-emotional and occupational stress. A key protective factor is maintaining a good level of positive mental health, understood as the psychological strength that enhances resilience and supports the ability to cope with adverse situations. Objective: To identify, synthesize, and evaluate, through a systematic review, interventions or programs promoting positive mental health aimed at improving nurses’ mental health and quality of life.Method:A search for quantitative studies was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and CINAHL. The PRISMA guidelines were followed, and the CASPe tool was used to assess the methodological quality of the selected articles. Results: Nine studies were analyzed that implemented interventions aimed at strengthening the positive mental health of participants. The most common techniques included mindfulness, problem-solving strategies, and resilience-building techniques. These methods demonstrated a significant reduction in stress and occupational burnout, as well as improvements in quality of life and in the care provided. Conclusions:The evidence suggests that positive mental health programs are effective in enhancing nurses' well-being. Institutional support for their integration into clinical practice could improve occupational health among nurses and enhance patient safety

Physical activity as a stressbuster: Insights from university students
(Servicio de Publicaciones. Universidad de Murcia, 2025) Mohammed, Redhwan Ali Esmail; Sin departamento asociado
The aim of this study was to investigate how university students' psychological stress can be reduced by physical activity. Using a stratified random sampling technique, 580 students (52.93% males and 47.07% females) were chosen from three private institutions in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Participants were emailed a questionnaire with 20 questions that was created based on prior research. The findings indicated that exercise positively influenced mood, reduced anxiety and depression, improved focus, and enhanced overall quality of life. Physical activity was also found to lower psychological stress and support mental health. Differences in responses were observed across gender, academic level, and college, with male students reporting slightly higher mean scores than females. Statistical analysis revealed significant gender differences (α ≤ 0.05) in perceptions of the role of physical activity in reducing psychological stress, favoring male students. This study highlights the importance of physical activity in helping university students manage psychological stress and emphasizes the necessity of integrating and promoting physical activity programs within the campus setting.

Self-concept in physical education for post-pandemic school health improvement
(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de Publicaciones, ) Galán Arroyo, Carmen; Batista Da Silva, Marco A.; Rojo Ramos, Jorge
Self-concept is one of the key aspects of personality development. It is relevant because it affects how a person sees him/herself and how he/she relates to others. During adolescence, self-perception tends to be highly variable due to the inherent changes of this stage, being a critical period in which to foster a healthy and confident personality. Add to this the critical circumstances experienced during the pandemic and it becomes a bombshell. Physical education classes, can promote the self-concept and improve school health. The aim of the study was to analyse self-concept in Spanish adolescents of physical education by sex, school location, age, educational level and body mass index (BMI) after the pandemic. A crosssectional study of 961 students’ physical education classes in public schools in Extremadura (Spain) was obtained and administered the Self-Concept Questionnaire version 5 (AF-5). The results showed that there is an association between AF-5 and sex, where adolescent girls have lower self-concept; there is a slight inverse relationship between AF-5 with age and BMI and there is no significant association between AF-5 and school location. In conclusion, knowing the relevant factors of self-concept after covid allows the educational community to implement tools for the optimal development of self-concept in Physical Education students, thus performance of adolescents.

Self-perceived and reported mental health in older adults
(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de Publicaciones, 2022) Zamora Iniesta, Tomás; Castell Gallud, Pedro; Vicente Escudero, José Luís; López Soler, Concepción; Castro Sáez, Maravillas; Fernández Fernández, María Visitación
Several studies assess mental health in older adults, but relatively few do so from a multi-informant perspective. In this work, discrepancies in self-perception and third-person perception of the mental health of older adults were analyzed in two age groups and differentiated by sex and place of residence. Relationships between different scales that measure psychopathology and psychosocial competencies were also analyzed. A sample of 288 older people aged between 60-95 years old (154 women, 53.47%) belonging to 12 municipalities in the Region of Murcia was em-ployed, and the Older Adult Self-Report (OASR) questionnaire was used to measure the psychopathology of older people and the Older Adult Be-havior Checklist (OABCL) instrument to find out the family's perception of these problems. Outcomes show different perceptions of mental health among older peo-ple and their families, which worsen with increasing age, psychosocial risk status and female gender. This reflects the need to develop specific treat-ment protocols for each gender and psychosocial risk situation, in order to address the differential mental health needs in older people.

The impact of free sports activities on trait anxiety among Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons
(Servicio de Publicaciones. Universidad de Murcia, 2025) Kayed, Mahmoud Wajih; Yousef, Iyad Abdullah; Raja, Tariq Ghazi; Sin departamento asociado
This study aimed to examine the effect of practicing free sports activities on trait anxiety among Palestinian prisoners in Israeli occupation prisons. A descriptive-analytical approach was employed, using a sample of 493 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli prisons (Eshel, Balboua, Ramon, Ofer, and Fqma) during 2022–2023. The authors developed a 32-item questionnaire to measure the impact of practicing free sports activities on trait anxiety. Based on the findings, the overall impact of practicing free sports activities on trait anxiety among Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons is high, with a response rate of 78.5%. Statistically significant differences were observed in the effect of sports activities on anxiety levels between married and single prisoners, with married prisoners benefiting more (p < 0.05). Additionally, based on the location of imprisonment, differences were noted in favor of Eshel prison regarding the impact of free sports activities on trait anxiety, Younger prisoners, particularly those under 25 years old, experienced greater reductions in trait anxiety, as did prisoners serving sentences of less than five years (p < 0.05). It is crucial that prisoners be encouraged to practice free sports activities due to their demonstrated positive effect on reducing trait anxiety. Regular sports activity programs should be implemented across all imprisonment centers as part of rehabilitation efforts to help reduce trait anxiety among Palestinian prisoners.
