Her career is particularly interesting since she uses her writing for political purposes at a historical time when the increase in literacy rate resulted in an unprecedented demand for reading material. This article fi lls a signi fi cant gap in Burgos Studies: its analysis of La entrometida/The Busybody shows how Carmen de Burgos reworks popular fi ction in order to foreground and question accepted identity formations.
