The founder of the dynasty, Seleucus I Nicator, promoted an ambitious urban planning policy that completely revolutionized the region, turning it into one of the most dynamic in the Mediterranean. However, this policy was not exclusive to northern Syria, but was an element through which the first Seleucids tried to structure their large kingdom. It was during the reign of Antiochus I Soter (280-261 BC) that the Seleucid became the hard core of the Seleucid Kingdom thanks to its optimal conditions, its strategic position, and its natural defences in a context of great military and political challenges in eastern Mediterranean.
