Creatine monohydrate ingestion-related placebo e effects on brief anaerobic exercise performance. A laboratory investigation
(Murcia: Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Murcia, 2017) Szabó, Attila; Szemerszky, R.; Dömötör, Z.; De la Vega, R.; Koteles, Ferenc
ABSTRACT: People’s thoughts infuence their action that led researchers to inves- tigate the placebo efect in exercise performance. In the current study the pla- cebo efects of creatine monohydrate on a one-minute anaerobic step-exercise performance were examined in a double blind laboratory inquiry. University students (n = 79, 64.5% women) were randomly assigned to one of three expe- rimental conditions: 1) intervention (ingestion of 80 mg/kg dissolved creatine monohydrate, n = 26), 2) placebo (ingestion of dissolved corn starch, thought to be creatine, n = 26), and 3) no-intervention control (ingestion of drinking water only, n = 27). After a baseline measurement, participants have consumed their respective drinks and 40 minutes later the 1-minute exercise was repeated. While analysis of variance revealed no group level diferences in actual and perceived change in performance, the latter was linked to participants’ expec- tations regarding performance on the second exercise test in the correlation analysis. Two thirds of the participants in the current study believed that their performance would improve in the actual test-exercise. However, these expec- tations were not linked to creatine ingestion. Tese fndings suggest that (1) a single dose of creatine monohydrate does not afect anaerobic performance, (2) in low-challenge and low-subjective-importance “artifcial” research condi- tions sufcient expectations could not be evoked, and probably due to the lack of creatine-related expectations the placebo efects did not emerge.

Depression and trait-anxiety mediate the influence of clinical pain on health-related quality of life in fibromyalgia
(Elsevier, 2020-03-15) Galvez-Sánchez, Carmen María; Montoro, Casandra; Duschek, Stefan; Reyes del Paso, Gustavo A.; Personalidad, Evaluación y Tratamiento Psicológicos
Background: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic pain condition associated with a substantial decrease in health-related quality of life (HRQoL). This study investigated the relationships of HRQoL with clinical parameters of FMS (pain, insomnia and fatigue) and affective variables (depression and anxiety). Methods: Women with FMS (n=145) and healthy women (n=94) completed the Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) to evaluate HRQoL, and self-report questionnaires pertaining to clinical pain, symptoms of anxiety and depression, fatigue and insomnia. Patterns of associations were assessed by correlation, multiple linear regression, and mediation analyses. Results: FMS patients showed lower scores on all SF-36 scales than healthy individuals. Clinical and emotional factors were inversely associated with SF-36 scores. Although depression was the strongest predictor of global HRQoL (explaining 36% of its variance), clinical pain and fatigue were the main predictors of physical components of HRQoL; depression and trait-anxiety were the main predictors of mental HRQoL components. Results of mediation analysis showed that depression, trait-anxiety and fatigue mediated the effect of clinical pain on HRQoL. Additionally, depression, trait-anxiety and fatigue mutually influenced each other, increasing their negative effects on the different areas of HRQoL. Conclusions: Our results suggest that FMS pain and related functional disability may increase depression and anxiety, in turn aggravating the primary symptoms of FMS and indirectly increasing the negative influence of pain on HRQoL. These results showed the need to evaluate and treat negative affective states in FMS.

Effect of high-tone external muscle stimulation on fatigue and functional outcomes in multiple sclerosis: A randomized controlled trial
(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de Publicaciones, 2025) Turky, Khalid Taha Yassin; Shalaby, Nevin M; Abdelmonem, Asmaa Foad; Abdeldayem, Tayseer Saber; Sarhan, Mohammed Ali Mohammed; Omar, Ghada S M; Mahmoud, Lama Saad El-Din
A major symptom experienced by subjects with multiple sclerosis is fatigue, which induces a decline in physical, cognitive, and functional capacity. Exercise and electrotherapy are cornerstones of rehabilitation that elicit acceptable effects on feelings of fatigue and on performing activities of daily living. A randomized controlled trial was conducted to investigate the effects of high-tone external muscle stimulation on fatigue and functional outcomes in multiple sclerosis patients. A total of 40 multiple sclerosis patients were allocated randomly to either: the study or control groups. The study group received high-tone external muscle stimulation, while the control group received a conventional selected exercise training program. Both groups received 3 sessions per week for one month. Both groups showed a significant improvement post-study compared with pre-study. There was a significant reduction in Disability Status Scale (p=0.002), Fatigue Severity Scale scores (p=0.004), and total scores of Modified Fatigue Impact Scale (p=0.001) of the study group compared with that of the control group. High-tone external muscle stimulation showed an important improvement effect for both fatigue and functional outcomes in multiple sclerosis patients, being more effective than the conventional exercise training program; therefore, it should be considered a beneficial treatment method for patients with multiple sclerosis.

From improved sleep regularity to reduced sleep complaints and mental health conditions: a population-based interventional study using a smartphone-based virtual agent
(Oxford University Press, 2023-09) Coelho, Julien; Pecune, Florian; Levavasseur, Yannick; Sevin, Etienne de; D'incau, Emmanuel; Patricia Sagaspe, Patricia; Sánchez Ortuño, María Montserrat; Micoulaud Franchi, Jean Arthur; Philip, Pierre; Enfermería
Study Objectives To explore the effect of sleep regularity on sleep complaints and mental health conditions (i.e. insomnia, fatigue, anxiety, and depressive symptoms) in a population-based interventional study using a smartphone-based virtual agent. Methods A populational cohort based on the Kanopée application, which provided interactions with a virtual companion to collect data on sleep and make personalized recommendations to improve sleep over 17 days. A pre-intervention sleep diary and interview were used for cross-sectional analysis (n = 2142), and a post-intervention sleep diary and interview were used for longitudinal analysis (n = 732). The intra-individual mean (IIM) and standard deviation (ISD) of total sleep time (TST) were calculated to measure sleep quantity and sleep regularity. Results The mean age at baseline was 49 years, 65% were female, 72% reported insomnia, 58% fatigue, 36% anxiety, and 17% depressive symptoms. Before the intervention, irregular and short sleep was associated with a higher likelihood of insomnia (Relative risk [RR] = 1.26 [1.21–1.30] for irregular TST and RR = 1.19 [1.15–1.23] for short TST), fatigue, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. After the intervention, the IIM of the TST increased while the ISD of the TST and sleep complaints and mental health conditions decreased. More regular TST was associated with reduced insomnia and depressive symptoms (RR = 1.33 [1.10–1.52] and RR = 1.55 [1.13–1.98], respectively). Conclusions Our results reveal a longitudinal association between sleep regularity and sleep complaints and mental health conditions. Policymakers, health professionals, and the general population should be aware that, beyond its positive effect on sleep health, regular sleep could promote mental health.

Psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the Chalder Fatigue Scale in clinical and general populations
(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de Publicaciones, 2024) Ceballos-Munuera, Celia; Senín-Calderón, Cristina; Rosales-Becerra, Ángela; Rodríguez-Testa, Juan F.
Objective:The Chalder Fatigue Scale (CFS) is a brief self-report screening scale for fatigue that is used in Spain but has not been validated for the Spanish population. The aim of this study was to adapt and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the CFS (Sp-CFS). Method:The sample consisted of 3,671 participants (3,190 from the general population and 481 patients), aged 18 to 86 years (M=28.43; DT=12.71), 67.6% of whom were women. Psychometric properties of the scale were tested in a cross-sectional design using cross-validation (exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis) and estimation of invariance (sex and clinical condition). Results:A four-factor model (low energy, sleep problems, concentration problems and subjective cognitive dysfunction) rather than an original two-factor model (physical and mental fatigue) provided better indices of goodness of fit to the data. The internal consistencyand stability of the scale were excellent. Its convergent validity was supported by its significant association with anxiety, depression, stress, and the positive and negative symptoms of the psychosis spectrum. The instrument did not show significant differences between sexes or clinical conditions, and it discriminated between the general population and the patients, with the latter obtaining significantly greater scores. Conclusions: Sp-CFS is a reliable and valid scale for measuring a transdiagnostic construct such as fatigue in Spanish general and clinical population.

The effect of physical therapy rehabilitation on fatigue and pain in female patients with fibromyalgia
(Universidad de Murcia: servicio de publicaciones, 2024) Abdelaziz, Nada Gamal; Ramzy, Gehan Mahmoud; Fayed, Hala Lotfy; Ahmed, Sara M; Ahmed, Gehan Mousa
This study aimed to examine the impact of physical therapy rehabilitation program on fatigue, pain and quality of life in female patients with fibromyalgia. Itwas designed as a single-blinded, randomized, pre and post-test controlled trial. Eighty female patients, aged 25 to 45, diagnosed with fibromyalgia were selected from the Kasr Al Ainyrheumatology outpatient clinic. The participants were allocated into two equal groups using a randomization procedure. Group (A) (control group, n=40) received transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS), moist heat, core muscle retraining, and manual therapy for trigger points, 3 times/week, for 4 weeks. Group (B) (study group, n=40) received the same treatments as Group A, plusaerobic exercises, flexibility exercises, and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), 3 times/week, for 4 weeks. Both groups were assessed before and after treatment using the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) and the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ). Statistically significant improvements were observed in FSS and FIQ scores for both groups post-treatment (p<0.05).When the two groups were compared after therapy, the study group (B) showed significantly greater improvement in FSS and FIQ(p<0.05). These findings suggest that physica therapy rehabilitation can effectively reduce fatigue, pain, and improve the quality of life for women with fibromyalgia
