    (Anti-)Grammaticalization paths of Spanish venir ‘to come’ + past participle

    Spanish venir ‘to come’ + past participle (pp) has different meanings as outcomes, namely arrangement (viene envuelto lit. ‘comes wrapped’) and causation (viene causado lit. ‘comes caused’). Furthermore, and contrary to Italian venire + pp and, to a lesser extent, Romanian veni + pp, it lacks the passive auxiliary function. In this article we explain these two meanings in compositional terms and show that only the latter can be properly considered a new grammaticalization path, in that the former venir is a lexical verb and as such allows the very same range of meanings and combinations in Medieval Spanish that it allows today. In addition, we argue that venir + pp might be analyzed as an impersonal construction. Finally, our findings support previous research on the grammaticalization of COME as a passive auxiliary, according to which it develops out of an intermediate COME with a change of state meaning. In Spanish this in-between state occurred, but only in an extremely restricted way and it didn’t go beyond the 13th century.

    Discours politique sur la pandémie du COVID-19: une étude de cas des allocutions télédiffusées de Sánchez et Macron en mars 2020.

    Abstract: This study draws on Critical Discourse Analysis, Pragmatics, and Rhetoric to investigate four instances of political discourse within the framework of the current pandemic situation. In particular, I analyse the statements by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and French President Emmanuel Macron released in March 2020 and aimed at announcing the state of emergency in Spain and France, respectively. Various categories of discursive and rhetorical resources are taken into account, such as presuppositions, metaphors, and parallels, among which deixis plays a crucial role as a fundamental mechanism for anchoring the verbal material in its extra-linguistic context. Strategic discursive functions are considered, above all in terms of persuasion and legitimacy, as expressed by the political leaders in question. The results highlight the discourse features of the political ideologies in power in two neighbouring, albeit culturally diverse countries: Macron’s France en guerre and Sánchez’s España unida.

    Gesto verbal y poética gestual: los principios de una dialéctica

    A lo largo del presente artículo se despliega una propuesta hermenéutica que se bautiza como ‘Dactiléctica’. Tras considerar la variedad interpretativa que permiten los gestos en una obra literaria se propone la ‘gestualidad verbal’ como un acercamiento a la naturaleza del poema desde las herramientas lingüísticas que ofrecen los elementos deícticos de la lengua, para alcanzar finalmente la tesis de que la naturaleza del poema es deíctica. El artículo se inicia con la formulación de la siguiente pregunta: ¿qué entendemos por ‘gesto verbal’? y, tras dar respuesta a esta pregunta, se desarrollan cuatro posibles objeciones a su definición, que permitirán reflexionar sobre las posibilidades interpretativas del ‘gesto verbal’ en el poema. El propósito del artículo no es, por tanto, la aplicación filológica del método a una obra en particular, sino la fundación de las bases necesarias para la elaboración de dicho método, atendiendo a la reflexión teórica que suscita. Las dos reflexiones más relevantes son la descripción de los procesos de poetización y de interpretación como operaciones gestuales, que permitirían concebirse y definirse bajo el estudio de la dirección del poema, y la propuesta de una hermenéutica como intercambio de direcciones del sentido a la que se ha denominado ‘Dactiléctica’
