We consider that his figure deserves to be analysed in depth because his dubious historicity, together with his significant affinities with later Iranian kings of very different character, namely Cyrus II, Smerdis the Magus and Darius I of Persia, suggests that Deioces’ profile may have been modelled in the image and likeness of these three monarchs. We also believe that our study may contribute to shed light on the profiles of oriental rulers in the Histories as a whole.
