This article presents an analysis of intensi!cation in a corpus of comments in Spanish to digital press articles about the Moors and Christians festival, a tradition that led to controversies in Spain due to its treatment of certain social groups. Based on Albelda and Briz (2020), intensi!cation is de!ned as a rhetorical and pragmatic strategy of argumentation whereby the speaker strengthens what he says and/or his intention to achieve more ef!ciently his conversational goals. Therefore, this paper looks into the linguistic strategies of intensi!cation, taking into consideration the speci!c interactional contexts in which they appear and the functions they carry out regarding argumentation and face. Based on the methodology developed by Albelda and al. (2014), the results show that intensi!cation appears mainly in moves that respond to the entire discussion in order to strengthen the expression of the personal perspective of the speaker.

    The Controversy
(Universidad de Murcia, 2020) Devriésère, Viviane
Education for democratic citizenship and intercultural dialogue have been key themes of the Council of Europe since 1954, which considers the place of education as central for people to live better together. Attacks and tensions in European societies in recent years have reinforced the importance of promoting a set of common values in societies. Thus, in 2012-‐2013, during Andorra's presidency of the Council of Europe, the project to define the competences necessary for a democratic society was born. Among the skills expected of citizens in democratic societies are different skills, such as the ability to communicate effectively with others, especially people of different cultures, and the ability to resolve conflicts peacefully. Dialogue and argumentation are central to the development of these skills. Controversy has emerged in the Council of Europe as an essential practice, to be implemented in schools, to enable citizens to settle controversies peacefully. The Council of Europe has made various tools available to States, including one on controversy, which is particularly interesting for building these skills. This paper will focus on how to teach controversy in schools .

The inferential meaning of controversial terms: the case of "terrorism"
(Springer, 2023-01-20) Gascón, José Ángel; Filosofía
The international community has not been able to agree on a definition of “terrorism,” which has been a controversial term for decades. In order to understand the controversy, here the meaning of “terrorism” is analysed by means of the inferentialist framework developed by Robert Brandom. It will be shown that there is wide agreement about (at least some of) the consequences of application of the term, whereas the conditions of application are precisely what is at issue. Three consequences of application will be distinguished: epistemic, evaluative, and programmatic. Evaluative and programmatic consequences of application of the term “terrorism” are widespread and very serious, even in the absence of a precise definition, and that explains why the conditions of application are a controversial matter. In the end, the controversy is best understood as a clash of interests regarding when the consequences of the term should apply.
