    Assessing Evidence-Based Practice Competence in Nurse Leadership Roles in Spain

    ABSTRACT Objective: This study evaluated the competency of nursing leaders and managers in Spain regarding evidence-based practice (EBP) and identified factors that affect its implementation in clinical environments. Background: EBP is essential for enhancing healthcare quality; however, there are still gaps between theoretical knowledge and its practical application. Nursing leaders are crucial in promoting EBP, yet their competence levels and obstacles have not been thoroughly examined in Spain. Material and methods: A cross-sectional study surveyed 159 nurse managers across 16 autonomous communities in Spain, utilizing the validated EBP-COQ Prof tool. The questionnaire assessed four competency domains—attitude, knowledge, skills, and utilization—using a 1 to 5 Likert scale. Predictors of EBP competency, including training, mentorship, and organizational afiliation, were analyzed using multivariate linear regression. Results: Participants demonstrated a strong overall EBP competence, with an average total score of 143.77 out of 175. The highest scores were in the attitude domain (36.26/40) and knowledge (43.09/55), whereas utilization scores were relatively lower (37.57/ 50). This indicates that applying EBP in practice still lags behind positive attitudes and knowledge. Key factors predicting higher EBP competence included EBP training, consistent reading of scientific literature, mentoring nursing students, and working in a BPSO center. These results also imply that organizational constraints may continue to impede the integration of EBP competence into routine managerial practice. Conclusions: Spanish nurse managers possess strong EBP knowledge but continue to encounter difficulties in applying it clinically. The study highlights four adjustable factors of EBP competency that could guide focused interventions. Implications for Nursing Management: Healthcare institutions should implement (1) training programs for addressing knowledge-to-practice gaps, especially for nonspecialist managers; (2) mentorship systems pairing EBP-competent leaders with novices; (3) protected time for EBP activities; and (4) expanded BPSO accreditation to institutionalize evidence-based care. Future initiatives should include EBP metrics in performance evaluations, and research should explore factors such as leadership styles and the impact of resource allocation on patient outcomes through longitudinal designs.

    Competencia en Práctica Basada en la Evidencia y factores asociados en las enfermeras de Atención Primaria en España

    Objetivo: Conocer el nivel de competencia en Práctica Basada en la Evidencia (PBE) de las enfermeras de Atención Primaria (AP) en Espana˜ y analizar los factores asociados. Diseno: ˜ Estudio transversal de carácter nacional, realizado en enero-marzo de 2020. Emplazamiento: AP en Espana. ˜ Participantes: Setecientas ochenta enfermeras de AP en activo en el Sistema Nacional de Salud con experiencia profesional mínima de un ano. ˜ Mediciones principales: 1) Variables sociodemográficas, profesionales y de acceso a infor mación científica, y 2) variable de resultado: competencia en PBE (actitud, conocimientos, habilidades y utilización), evaluada mediante el cuestionario EBP-COQ Prof©. Se realizaron análisis bivariados y multivariados mediante regresión lineal. Resultados: La puntuación media en el nivel de competencia en PBE de las enfermeras de AP fue de 131,5 (desviación típica [DT] 17,0). Por dimensiones: actitud 36,8 (DT 3,6); conocimien tos 38,2 (DT 8,9); habilidades 23,0 (DT 3,5) y utilización 33,3 (DT 6,1). Leer más de 3 artículos en el último mes es la variable que tiene más influencia sobre todas las dimensiones del EBP COQ Prof©, seguida de la formación en PBE (más de 150 h) y la tutorización de alumnos de Enfermería. El nivel educativo (máster, especialista y doctorado) se asocia con las dimensio nes conocimientos y habilidades, mientras que trabajar en un centro BPSO® se asocia con la utilización de la PBE Conclusiones: Estos hallazgos pueden orientar a los gestores en los servicios de AP a planificar estrategias que mejoren el nivel de competencia en PBE de las enfermeras, dirigidas princi palmente a lograr una aplicación real en la práctica clínica. No obstante, se hace necesario considerar el posible impacto del sesgo de selección en los resultados.

    Competencias personales y participativas vinculantes a la inserción laboral de los universitarios: Validación de una escala

    The big changes that take place in a social and productive context demand putting a set of competencies into action that relate to the same equation of training, orientation and employment are demanded. Faced with this growing commitment of employability, the aim of this paper is to describe the construction of a scale of competencies for university students on entering the workforce and analyze the validity of construct of said scale. 931 final year undergraduate students from the University of Murcia and the University of Granada participated. To achieve the aim of this research, a quantitative methodological approach was adopted and a non-experimental, exploratory, and transversal study with a survey was applied. The main results indicated the reliability and validity of the proposed competency scale, as well as its adequacy to the proposed theoretical model that claims that relevance and active presence of personal (individual) and interpersonal (social) competencies are the most influential competencies for an optimal entry into the job market today. Universities must manage employability through a group of actions directed to encourage these kinds of competencies and promote better cooperative training with the objective to improve the university-workforce relationship, to access job opportunities and professional internships, and to form a long-term career goal

    Core evidence-based practice competencies and learning outcomes for European nurses: consensus statements.

    Background: Consensus on evidence-based practice (EBP) competencies and associated learning outcomes for registered nurses has not yet been achieved in the European context. Aims: To establish a set of core EBP competencies for nurses and the most important EBP learning outcomes encompassing attitudes, knowledge, and skills dimensions for implementation into nursing education in European countries. Methods: A multi-phase modified Delphi survey was conducted: Phase 1, a literature review; Phase 2, a two-round consensus of experts; and Phase 3, a Delphi survey. Experts from six European countries participated. Results: In Phase 1, 88 records were selected and 835 statements extracted, which were grouped according to the seven steps of EBP. After removing 157 duplicates, the remaining competencies (n = 678) were evaluated in Phase 2. Then, a two-round expert consensus was reached, with 24 competencies and 120 learning outcomes identified and divided into affective, cognitive, and skills domains. In Phase 3, based on a Delphi survey expert consensus, all evaluated statements were included in a final set of competencies and learning outcomes. Only two learning outcomes were recommended for allocation to a different domain, and four were reformulated as suggested, with no further changes to the others. Linking Evidence to Action: The set of EBP competencies and learning outcomes can guide nurse educators, managers, and EBP stakeholders in the development of content that incorporates EBP knowledge, skills, and attitudes into educational programs. Prioritizing the EBP competencies and learning outcomes that are most necessary and adapting them to every context will provide healthcare organizations with guidelines for enhancing the continuing education of nurses. These results could facilitate the development of effective tools for assessing nursing students’ and nurses’ perception of competencies required for EBP processes.

    Desarrollo de competencias a través de objetos de aprendizaje

    Hoy en día existen muchísimos recursos educativos disponibles de forma gratuita a través de Internet, sin embargo, debido a la diversidad de conocimientos previos y estilos de aprendizaje de los estudiantes, no resulta del todo fácil encontrar los que se ajusten a sus necesidades específicas. Una de las características más importantes de los Objetos de Aprendizaje (OAs) es la posibilidad de reutilizar recursos para atender a diversas situaciones educativas. Para optimizar la utilidad de los OAs, es importante que su diseño contenga los elementos pedagógicos necesarios para ser un recurso de aprendizaje en sí mismo, susceptible de ser reutilizado en otras unidades didácticas. El aprendizaje basado en competencias, requiere un esfuerzo que no depende únicamente de estrategias de enseñanza, sino además de saber seleccionar y aplicar recursos adecuados para su logro. Sobre esta base, se proponen algunas orientaciones para diseñar y clasificar OAs como recursos dirigidos al desarrollo de competencias, ayudando así a una adecuada recuperación y reutilización de estos recursos.

    El enfoque por competencias en el contexto universitario español. La visión del profesorado

    La adopción del enfoque basado en competencias comporta un cambio importante desde el punto de vista pedagógico y didáctico que afecta directamente a la formación universitaria y a la práctica docente. Sin embargo, los esfuerzos institucionales desplegados para favorecer los cambios estructurales han sido superiores a la atención deparada al cambio cultural y pedagógico que afecta al profesorado. Por esta razón, y con el propósito de ampliar los espacios de reflexión y valorar los progresos alcanzados en estos últimos años, hemos profundizado en las percepciones que tienen los docentes de distintas universidades españolas sobre el enfoque por competencias. El estudio, de corte cualitativo, se ha basado en grupos de discusión como técnica de recogida de datos. En él han participado 43 profesores de seis universidades españolas públicas. La información resultante de las grabaciones ha sido transcrita y categorizada siguiendo un proceso deductivo-inductivo. La información proporcionada ha sido estructurada en torno a 36 subcategorías, agrupadas en 5 categorías. El análisis de resultados permite concluir que el profesorado universitario tiene dificultades para incorporar las competencias transversales al currículum académico, tiende a mostrarse pesimista respecto al impacto del enfoque por competencias en la mejora de la práctica educativa y considera que la incorporación exitosa de este enfoque pasa por profundizar en la actual reforma educativa, adoptar perspectivas más holísticas y atender a los aspectos culturales del cambio.

    Evidence-based practice competence among nurses in acute and critical care settings: a national cross-sectional study in Spain – The #Evidencer Project

    Objectives: This study assessed EBP competence among critical care nurses in Spain and identified significant factors affecting the integration of EBP into clinical practice. Methods: A multicenter cross-sectional study involved nurses in emergency departments, pre-hospital emergency services, and intensive care units throughout Spain. Competence was assessed through self-report using the validated EBP-COQ Prof© questionnaire, comprising 35 items divided into four dimensions: attitude, knowledge, skills, and utilization. Descriptive, bivariate, and multivariate regression analyses were conducted to identify the predictors of EBP competence. Results: The sample comprised 847 nurses (78.5% female; mean age 39.89 years, SD = 9.13). The average total EBP competence score was 130.6 (SD = 17.29). Scores across dimensions were highest for attitude (37.1/40) and knowledge (38.0/55), while skills (23.0/30) and utilization (32.6/50) were lower. Key predictors of higher competence included EBP training (p < 0.001), regular reading of scientific articles (p < 0.001), postgraduate education (p < 0.001), mentorship roles (p = 0.018), and employment at Best Practice Spotlight Organization® (BPSO) centers (p = 0.001). Competence declined slightly with increasing professional experience (p = 0.037). Conclusions: Spanish critical care nurses exhibit moderate to high competence in evidence-based practice (EBP), showcasing solid attitudes and knowledge but lacking practical application. Healthcare institutions should emphasize organized EBP training to close this gap, encourage research involvement, and cultivate supportive environments by implementing initiatives such as BPSO programs. Tackling these elements can bolster EBP implementation and enhance patient outcomes in critical care environments. Implications for clinical practice: These findings emphasize the need for strategies to improve evidence-based practice (EBP) in critical care. Healthcare organizations should focus on structured EBP education, regular access to scientific literature, and mentorship, including BPSO® programs. Enhancing EBP skills among experienced nurses can boost decision-making, patient safety, and care quality in high-acuity settings environments.

    El módulo de formación en centros de trabajo y la empleabilidad de los alumnos en el sector turístico

    El objetivo del presente trabajo es analizar la incidencia que tiene el módulo de Formación en Centros de Trabajo de la familia profesional de Hostelería y Turismo, en la empleabilidad de los futuros profesionales del sector turístico, así como la repercusión del mismo en su posterior experiencia laboral y su desenvolvimiento en la realidad empresarial. Para ello, se han trabajado diversos artículos, legislación, variedad de informes y estudios de distintas entidades, tanto públicas como privadas, así como encuestas realizadas a los centros educativos del país que imparten ciclos formativos de Formación Profesional correspondientes a la familia profesional de Hostelería y Turismo. Tras el análisis se observa que el módulo de Formación en Centros de Trabajo tiene una gran incidencia en el futuro laboral de los alumnos que cursan enseñanzas profesionales, dotándolos de las herramientas o competencias profesionales suficientes para afrontar su futuro laboral.

    Percepción de Competencias en el EEES: análisis en el Grado de Educación Primaria

    The development of titles according to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) requires the design of their titles so the students acquire a series of specific and generals competencies are defined according to the relevant legislation as in the Primary Education degree. It corresponds to the universities achieve this students to acquire them. After the implementation of these titles and once it has left the first class according to the EHEA corresponds to do an analysis and reflect on how they are acquiring. This article discusses the perception of competence by part 55 students of final year degree in Primary Education based on three dimensions: development, domain and importance granted. The results indicate a high degree of satisfaction, being higher than those related to the degree of importance given to each of the competencies. Follow les estimations related to the degree of domain and finally to the development. Specifically showed lower results to be obtained by those items relating to competences in multilingual contexts or capacity of speaking and writing in several languages (at least in a foreign language).

    Questionnaire to Evaluate the Competency in Evidence-Based Practice of Registered Nurses (EBP-COQ Prof©): Development and Psychometric Validation

    Background: The availability of valid and reliable instruments, based on current competency frameworks, is essential to respond to the need for accurate measurement of the competency of registered nurses in evidence-based practice (EBP). Aims: To develop and validate a questionnaire capable of measuring EBP competencies in registered nurses following the competency framework developed by Melynk et al. (2014). Methods: The study was developed in two stages: (a) creation of the questionnaire based on an operational definition of the construct, its face, and content validation by 10 experts, and cognitive piloting; (b) psychometric evaluation of the questionnaire by a cross-sectional, and multicenter study between February and November 2018. Analyses were conducted of the questionnaire’s reliability and construct validity (exploratory [EFA] and confirmatory [CFA] fac tor analyses). Results: First phase: The initial version of EBP-COQ© Prof contained 50 items grouped into four dimensions (attitudes, knowledge, skills, and utilization). After two expert validation rounds, a 35-item version was obtained with content validity index of 0.86. Second phase: The questionnaire was completed by 579 nurses; EFA with PROMAX rotation revealed that the four factor model had the best fit (χ2 = 311.32; p = .001, root mean square error of approximation [RMSEA] = 0.000, 90% confidence interval [CI] = 0.000 – 0.010; comparative fit index [CFI] = 1), and it showed a good CFA fit index: CFI = 0.932, and RMSEA = 0.093 (90% CI = 0.097 − 0.108). Cronbach’s α for each factor ranged from 0.817 (factor III) to 0.948 (factor II). Linking Evidence to Action: EBP-COQ Prof© is a valid, reliable, and easily administered ques tionnaire that measures the self-perceived competency of registered nurses in EBP based on an updated and specific competency framework. It permits the independent evaluation of at titudes, knowledge, and skills related to EBP and of its utilization in hospital and primary care settings, allowing the monitoring of compliance with EBP

    Taxonomía de tipos de desempeño en Fisioterapia, desde saberes procedimentales técnicos al desempeño profesional

    El trabajo presenta una taxonomía de los tipos de desempeño como marco de referenciapara la planificación y programación de planes de enseñanza orientados al desarrollo decompetencias en Fisioterapia, aunque puede aplicarse a otras profesiones. En la literatura existendiversos marcos de referencia basados en el logro de competencias que dan fundamento a la construcción de la taxonomía, además, se han consultado trabajos relacionados con la temática. Se trata de un trabajo de desarrollo, cualitativo, mediante análisis documental y consulta por encuesta a kinesiólogos que se desempeñan como docentes de prácticas clínicas en la Universidad. A partir de la revisión de la literatura queda planteada la necesidad de aportar una clasificación de los desempeños en base a saberes procedimentales considerando los grados de integración y niveles de complejidad. Se identificaron 5 tipos de desempeño: basados en procedimientos técnicos,procedimientos estratégicos, tareas profesionales, actividades profesionales y el ser profesional. El artículo concluye enfatizando la relevancia de la taxonomía para el diseño curricular, la enseñanza de prácticas kinésicas y la formación de profesionales de la salud.
