- PublicationOpen AccessObservaciones sobre la expresión colocacional de la intensidad en "Beuve de Hamptone".(Universidad de Murcia, Servicio de Publicaciones, 2019) Blanco Escoda, XavierBasing on examples from the anglo-norman chanson de geste Beuve de Hampton, this paper emphasizes the importance of analysing the collocational expression of intensity in Old French. On the one hand, we observe the tendency of Modern French translations to massively introduce intensive collocations that are absent in the original text. On the other hand, we present and comment many examples of adjectival, adverbial and verbal collocations in Old French, as well usual and widespread collocations as idiosyncratic ones. We point out how the choice of certain collocatives allows to characterize an author’s style.
- PublicationOpen AccessPaving the road to hell: The Spanish word menas as a case study(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de Publicaciones, ) Bordonaba Plou, David; Torices, José R.Menas is a term that has attracted a great deal of attention on the political scene in Spain at present. Although the term had a neutral usage originally, being an acronym for unaccompanied foreign minors, it has recently evolved into a term with clear negative connotations. This article explores what kind of term menas is today. Specifically, we will examine whether menas is a slur or an ESTI, an ethnic/social term used as an insult. First, we point out the most defining characteristics of both types of terms. Then, using analyses on linguistic corpora, we show that menas exhibits the most defining characteristics of ESTIs. We end by discussing the possible evolution of the term, pointing out that, although the term presents the features related to ESTIs, there are two possible scenarios. On the one hand, the term may retain its neutral uses and thus remain an ESTI. On the other hand, the neutral uses may disappear, and thus the term may become a slur.
- PublicationOpen AccessTeaching german phrasemes throught english. The role of equivalence(Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Darmstadt, 2024) Mena-Martínez, Florentina M.; Almela Sánchez, Moisés; Strohschen, Carola; Traducción e Interpretación; Facultad de LetrasThis article delves into the linguistic and pedagogical basis for the PhraseoLab project, whose aim is to promote the learning of German phraseology (collocations, idioms and expressive routine formulae) through English. The methodology adopted in this study, the plurilingual approach, requires the consideration of various phraseological equivalence parameters for the selection of phraseological material for language teaching. Along the qualitative model, aspects related to the prototypical usage of phrasemes must also be taken into account. A corpus-based analysis of frequency applied to collocations is used to refine the traditional model and to provide valuable information in the identification of equivalence levels among phrasemes and in the grading of teaching materials.
