- PublicationOpen AccessMatrimonios concertados y población romaní de Europa del Este en España(Universidad de Murcia, Servicio de Publicaciones, 2025) Gutiérrez-Sánchez, José David; Estepa Maestre, Francisco; Sin departamento asociadoThe following article aims to understand the experiences and expectations of underage and adult women of Romanian origin who are motivated to enter into arranged marriages in shantytowns in Spain. The research, using a qualitative approach, employs a case study through individualised interviews in communities in four Spanish provinces between 2020 and 2024. A total of 19 interviews were conducted and analysed through an inductive construction of categories of analysis where codes were assigned to the different participants. The results expose women’s statements regarding arranged marriage and its complexities. It is possible to conclude that influence, dowry and family honour are aspects that, together with poverty and the maintenance of customs, encourage this type of marriage.
