- PublicationOpen AccessA study of the acquisition of discourse markers by Chinese learners of English.(Murcia, Universidad de Murcia, Servicio de Publicaciones, 2013) Bu, JieminThis study investigates the acquisition of discourse markers by Chinese learners of English in terms of gender, style and individual identity. The subjects of the study are 15 female university students and 15 male university students. The data is collected by means of audio recording in the classroom discussion and in the interviews. The examined discourse markers are like, yeah, oh, you know, well, I mean, right, ok and actually , and a total of 1292 tokens for these discourse markers are identified in the subjects’ classroom discussion and in the subjects’ interviews. The results of the study show that: (1) the female subjects use discourse markers more frequently than the male subjects. (2) all the subjects employ discourse markers in the interviews at a higher rate than in the classroom discussion. (3) the subjects’ individual identity has the effects on their use of discourse markers. (4) the subjects display their individual variations in their frequencies of discourse markers in the interviews and in the classroom discussion respectively.

- PublicationOpen AccessData-driven analysis on the weight of the explicit and implicit construct in ELT textbooks.(Universidad de A Coruña, Servicio de Publicaciones, 2010) Criado, Raquel; Sánchez Pérez, Aquilino; Filología InglesaIt is generally accepted that there is a close relationship between explicit and declarative knowledge, and between implicit and procedural knowledge. Explicit is also associated with learning in which consciousness is engaged, while implicit is associated with acquisition, which takes place without a conscious control of the process. Research in explicit and implicit knowledge should have a counterpart in real language teaching and in the classroom, if research is to be the trigger of innovation and open new frontiers in ELT. The promotion of explicit or implicit knowledge (learning or acquisition of language) is necessarily present in the teaching materials and/or in the classroom action. As regards teaching materials, the minimal teaching unit par excellence, the exercise or activity, should reveal the nature of the type of knowledge aimed at. In this study a corpus with the activities of an ELT textbook was compiled. This was then analysed and systematised from the perspective of its explicit and implicit potential. The results show whether the textbook complies or not (and how much) with the requirements leading to explicit or implicit learning. --------------------------------
- PublicationOpen AccessInnovation in business model as a response to the sharing economy(Emerald Publishing Limited, 2023-06-16) Espinosa Sáez, Daniel; Delgado-Ballester, Elena; Munuera-Alemán, José Luís; Comercialización e Investigación de MercadosPurpose – The sharing economy (SE) is significantly affecting traditional companies, which have felt a need to adapt their business model. The aim of this study is to identify the different types of adaptation developed by companies within a SE context, and to examine how they relate to their characteristics. Design/methodology/approach – A content analysis involving 149 real-world adaptation cases was carried out, after which a Kruskal–Wallis test and a multiple correspondence analysis were used to explore the relationships between the types of adaptation identified, the business characteristics and the strategic decisions taken for these adaptations. Findings – Through the analyses proposed in the study, the main conclusions suggest that the way companies adapt to SE is related to business characteristics and the strategic decisions taken for these actions, demonstrating throughout the article what types of adaptations are made depending on variables such as sector of activity or business orientation. Originality/value – This study is the first to examine the variables affecting the decisions among traditional companies in response to the SE. In addition, this work explores the SE from the business point of view, shedding light on the participation in SE by traditional companies.
